I just purchased 3.6 from 3.02.  I've downloaded it and the tax lists.  When I right click BD and run as admin, I get the welcome screens vs. the license box.  Also, their is no license box from the help area.  Please advise.  Susan

Hello Susan,

Not sure I follow. What are you referring to as the Welcome screen; is that the Splash screen with the picture of the Warbling Vireo (owl, dragonfly, etc) on it? To get to the license information window, be sure to click on the main Help menu; not the Help toolbar button. See screen shot below. If this doesn't get you going, please give more info and we will figure it out.

Jeff

It says Welcome to BD 3 across the top with an owl on the side and a couple of small gray screens before the main SW opens.  I downloaded 3.6 but perhaps haven't done something I'm supposed to.  The main Help menu has a license info but it just lists my data and has an empty box for Authorization Code (don't know which number that's referring to) but nothing about unlock.

Hello Susan,

You are running v3.0 if you get that message. You should see a new desktop icon on your desktop for v3.6. It is a black pair of binoculars.

Did you run the 3.6 installation? You would have gotten the installation procedure which, among other things, asks you where to install BDv36. Sounds like maybe you just downloaded the installer. If you are using Firefox, you need to open the download in the Downloads Mgr and run the installer. You can start again by clicking on the Network Installation link on the Downloads page on this site. But, once it downloads the installer, you must run it. Internet Explorer automatically asks you if you want to run it after downloading it. But Firefox will just save it in the downloads manager, then you must run it from there to start the installation.

Let me know,

Jeff

OK. Unlock accomplilshed for licenses. Do I have to do that for the taxomonies also? And, please tell me how to access the tutorial for importing the taxonomy. I glanced at it prior to shutting the computer down but don't remember all of the instructions.

Hi Susan,

Great! You only have to reapply the licenses you purchased since 3.0. I show two for you (clements 632 and ABA 2008 w/subspecies).

You can access the tutorial for importing tax lists from the main Birder's Diary menu under the Windows start => All Programs button.

Let me know if I can assist with anything else,

Jeff

Jeff,

What do you mean by reapplying the licences for the tax lists?  Where do I find those instructions?

Susan

Also, when trying to import the tax list, after selecting the file, I get the following error message "Name not unique! The name (Birds - NA - ABA- 2008a s subspecies) is already in use. Please choose another." Is it ok to rename the list or will that cause the import not to work?

Hi Susan,

Before you import the tax lists, be sure that you perform the steps (e.g. copying your old database) required from the Product Info > Upgrading from 2.x or 3.0 page. Namely, you need to copy your old v3.0 database into the v3.6 installation directory. Do that, and then import your new tax lists, and you won't get that error message.

Let me know,

Jeff

Hi Susan,

Just noticed your previous post. Forget about that statement. I thought those two tax lists were form a previous post. Simply activate the licenses for those two tax lists normally.

What is "normal" activation?  Is the right click and run as admin only for the 3.6 licenses?

Hi Susan,

Yes, to activate any licenses right-click and run as admin. Any other time just start BD normally by double-clicking on the desktop icon.
