I was able to install Birder's Diary 3.6.49 on my new Windows 7 computer. However, when I attempt to restore my Birder's Diary Database from my old computer I am told that permission is denied. Anybody have any idea of where I go from here?

Hello Paul,

Is your old computer running v3.6.49?

How did you create your BD backup on your old computer (the details matter very much)? Did you use the BD "Backup" feature?

What media (e.g. CDrom, DVD, memory stick) did you use to transfer your BD backup from old to new computer? If on CD/DVD, then the database file might be ReadOnly and that may be causing a problem. Use Windows Explorer to move the backup to your hard disk and then check its Properties to see if the Read Only flag is set. If so, clear it. Then try the restore from the on-disk copy.

Give me all the exact details of the error message you get. When do you get it? During the REstore process, or when you try to use it after the restore. NOTE: after any restore, always exist and restart BD.

Let's start here,

Jeff

My old XP computer is running v3.6.49.

I used the backup feature in BD to make a backup file. I then transferred this to a USB Memory stick. I then transfered the file to the new computer. I tried restoring both from the memory stick and from a file on the computer's hard drive, both with no luck.

I get the permission denied message right after I say Yes to the question asking if I want to restore.

I have an idea. I bought Clements list of the birds of the world and installed it in the old computer. But I have not done this with the new computer. Could that be the problem

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the info. However, I still need the full and complete text and number of the error message. That can generally give me a clue.

No - Clements is not the problem. That is in your database, and when you transfer the database, it goes with it. You only have to re-activate all licenses on your new computer.

In theOnline Users Guide here: http://www.birdersdiary.com/Documentation/BDV37/How_To/Move_Birder_s_Diary_to_a_new_Computer.htm is the topic for moving BD to a new computer. But you appear to have already done all of that; just wanted to point it out for reference.

The full and complete error message should help shed light on this. If you can, get a screen capture and post it here.

Also, I can jump on your computer real quick and get this going for you if that doesn't work.

One other thought that can produce priv errors, did you install BD to "C:\Birder's Diary" or "C:\Program Files\Birder's Diary". The latter is incorrect. If you installed there, remove and install using the Network Installation link from the Downloads page on this site. The default for that is "C:\Birder's Diary".

Let me know,

Jeff

The program is in Program files\Birder's Diary. So maybe this is the problem. I will reinstall and see how it works.

Thanks.

Please use the Network Installation link on the Downloads page to run the install after removing the current BD.

Let us know when you are done please,

Jeff

Jeff Jones,

I took your advice and deinstalled BD the reinstalled using the network installation. I got the license for version 3.6 to work, after several tries. Now when I try to restore I am give a runtime error 3031, not valid password. Then I get the following message: C:\Birder'sDiary\BDv31\data\MASTER36database.mdb is not a valid path. Any advice would be appreciated. PFJE.

After inputting all of the various codes for special checklists purchased over time the software has been functioning well. Therefore there is no need to respond further. Merry Christmas.
