I have Windows XP Home. I am using my speech recognition tool to write this message . Speech recognition works everywhere but in Birder's Diary. I have downloaded all of the MS Agent files MicroSoft has to offer. I even reinstalled the OS. When I ask Petey to listen, a little box informs me that "Petey cannot listen." The voice commands box says, "Speech input is not available in English." Is there a file somewhere that needs to be added to Petey's profile so that he can understand English?

Please help.

Jamie

Hello Jamie,

Microsoft's MSAgent functionality does not coexist well with other speech recognition software. My experience is that Petey will not work with other such software installed most of the time.

You seem to doing the right things in terms of downloading the MSAgent stuff (no longer supported by MS).

My thoughts are, that if any solution can be achieved, that you will need to bring up the speech dialog from the control panel. Getting this speech dialog to work there will be key. It probably involves setting the speech engine to something that will probably break your other recognition software.

In the end, after you have exhausted the above, a call to Microsoft ($fee$) might be the only thing that could get you going again.

If you do resolve this somehow, please post back and let the rest of us know. Sorry to be of little help on this, however supporting MSagent has been a losing battle. It works most of the time, up and until someone installs 3rd party speech software as you have done.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for getteing back to me so quickly.

When I bring up the speech dialogue from the control panel it says I have Microsoft English ASR Version 5 Engine installed. When I click on the OTHER tab it says, "It appears that SAPI 4 is also installed on your system. Please use this button to launch the SAPI 4 control panel." When I do that, I get a tree of engines that contains a folder labeled "speech output." That contains the folder called "TruVoice" which contains a folder called "English (United States)" which contains files called "Adult Male #1, American English (TruVoice)." "Adult Male #2, ..." etc. I'm doing a search to see if I can find where any of this is located then deleting it to see if that solves the problem. If you have any other suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

I just have to clarify that I had never even tried to use speech recognition software until we got birders diary, so I have no idea where any of this came from. I can only surmise that it was bundled in my original computer software. It certainly has been a learning experience.

Hi Jamie,

I think the "English ASR Version 5 engine" is the one that is causing the problem. I think what you want to activate is the SAPI 4 engine. Get that to work in the Speech Dialog window(s) and Petey will probably work then.
