"View/Edit Window Scrolling & UDD Editing"

Jeff-

I have run into a couple of minor issues that I do not see referenced on the forums:

1) The View/Edit dialog does not scroll horizontally, so columns to the right of the viewable window are not accessible.  Seems a horizontal scroll bar should appear when the window width is smaller than the grid;

2) When I update the abbreviated name of a "Yes/No" UDD the character string is not updated in any of the grid column headers.  The only way to update is to delete the UDD and recreate.  Of course this action deletes all assigned data.  This situation may apply to other data types as well - I will investigate.

Thanks,

Harris

Hi Harris,

1) The View/Edit window auto sizes all fields such that they fit within the width of the grid. I don't think you can ever have a situation where there are columns off the right. Can't say that I remember why we did it that way.

2) The updated abbreviation does get displayed in the View/Edit Grid. But, once you change the Abbr of the UDD, it will disappear from your grid. You just have to re-add it, because the grid remembered it by the old name. Only Yes/No UDDs display the abbrev name, others display the full name. Yes, removing a UDD will cause all the data it was storing to be removed.

fyi

Thanks Jeff.

For some reason I am periodically losing columns off the right side of the View/Edit window. This behavior may be tied to the saved layouts I have created. When I invoke one of them in particular at least one column and one half of another wide column are hidden. This is not the layout I saved. I guess I need to experiment more with this grid but for some reason my layouts appear to be corrupted. Maybe this is due to the addition/subtraction of UDFs to the View/Edit grid?

I understand that the modified Yes/No UDF abbreviation only updates in the View/Edit grid and not the Sightings Entry grid, for instance. I guess this is manageable by adding a corrected UDF then performing a mass edit, then removing the offending UDF. Would it be difficult to have UDF edits apply to all grids?

Jeff-

Upon further investigation, my View/Edit problem occurs when I resize the window. The saved layout scales up OK, as when I maximize the window. When I restore the window back to it's previous size it's still OK. But when I then change the size of the window by dragging a corner the layout column widths become distorted. It is at this point that I re-invoke the saved layout and the columns get lost to the right. If I now maximize then restore the window to its new size the layout is fixed and all columns are visible. Yikes. I think I am getting the hang of it. A horizontal scroll bar might be useful for this window if you could fix the name column to prevent it from scrolling off the left side, like is done with the Sightings Entry window. But I can also see why one would want to have all of the selected data fields visible as is the current case (normally).

Hi Harris,

The grid columns sizes and resizing issues are day-one bugs in the 3rd party control I use to display that. I worked for weeks on trying to resolve that and there simply isn't a good way around it. It is a bug in the manufacturer's code on that one. So we are stuck.

I will get the UDF names to work correctly on the View/Edit Grid. thanks

Thanks again Jeff.

In my ever-so-humble opinion (and in the interest of user friendliness) it would be worthwhile to consider a new and improved View/Edit grid for a future release. For a new user like me it would flatten the learning curve a bit.

I do appreciate your help.

You know what Harris - I agree with you. The problem is in trying to get the control to autosize to the user-selected width. I think, for me, that the solution is to just allow for horizontal scroll bars and let the width be bigger than the size of the window.

Thanks much for the input.

Jeff
