I'm trying to add a sighting using the checklist Mammals - NA -2005 for Pygmy Shrew, but it does not show up on Add- Checklist Entry.  When looking at Checklists, I see that Pygmy Shrew is not associated with ANY location.  After downloading a checklist, do I need to create associations with locations before I can use the checklist (other than birds)?

Bert: did you download the Mammal CHECKLIST .csv file and import via checklist import? I looked and the checklist does have locations for Pygmy Shrew. Also you can leave the Location blank when you open the add screen and you'll see the entire list of things for a Taxonomy list.

You are right, I only downloaded one file, not both. My problem. Thanks.
BTW, no mammals are listed in ADD menu if the location is left blank, although it works if I put in WORLD or some other location.

Hi Bert,

Not sure what settings you are using, but certainly, all things classified by the selected tax list will show up in the Checklist Entry screen when no Location is specified. See below.

Jeff,

No, it does not work for my system.  I have the setup just like yours and when I press CONTINUE, nothing happens.  If I set the location to Colorado or any place else, it works fine.

Screen shots attached.

Hi Bert,

That is amazing. I would like to see that for myself sometime. Please let me know when I could get onto your system to see that.

Set a time and give me at least a two hour notice (the most time I ever spend away from the computer - sigh).

Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff,

I've forgotten what you need to get on my computer. I'm in my RV and hooked up with a MotoSAT satellite dish system and I'm always on-line. But I've only got a cell phone, no land line. I'll be here all day and for the next couple of weeks.

Hi Bert,

Just run the Desktop Sharing Program at the bottom of this page - OR - select "Help | Internet: Invite Support onto your System" from withiin Diary.

What about 3pm MDT?

I just got off Bert's system. Leaving the Location Filter empty causes no checklist entry window to ever come up; regardless of whichever tax list is chosen.

I rebuilt his Location Performance table and no change. He can produce a checklist using the Mammals tax list with no location specified and has no problems.

This must be an installation issue. I asked him to reinstall and post back here with the results.

Jeff,

I went to download site and thought I'd try the single file version to make sure I had a completely new install. On http://www.birdersdiary.com/Downloads/tabid/56/Default.aspx when I click on Download I get a "page cannot be displayed" message. So, I can't download single file (120MB) version of 3.6.22.

Jeff,

I went to the download page and tried downloading the single file 120MB version so I will have a completely new install.
I get an error on page http://www.birdersdiary.com/Downloads/tabid/56/Default.aspx when I press the download button.
So, I can't download version 3.6.22 as single file.

HI Bert,

Please perform the following steps to update your BD. Often, when I find issues like this on customer's systems, it is because antivirus/firewall software prevented proper installation of system files.

1. Turn of ALL antivirus/firewall software for the duration of the installation
2. start v3.6
3. Click on Help -> Internet: Check for an Update!
4. Proceed to a complete installation (you can omit the download of the video tutorials)

This should at least get you up to date to see if the installation will fix your issue.

Let me know please,
Jeff

Jeff,

I turned the computer off overnight and started fresh this morning. I didn't do the 4 steps you said because I hadn't yet read you message. This time I successfully accessed the download page and downloaded the single file 120MB version without yesterday's problem. The only thing I can think of that was different today vs. yesterday is that we had previously run the computer sharing program.

I installed the newest software. I repeated the original problem and it is exactly the same as when you tried it yesterday on my computer, i.e., leaving the location field blank will NOT produce a checklist, but entering a location produces a proper list.

Hello Bert,

Please repeat the installation with - and this is the key part - all antivirus/firewall software turned off.

I want to eliminate this as a possibility.

I have walked through the entire code path and cannot possibly see how this could happen. This usually points to an invalid installation. That usually points to antivirus/firewall software interfering with a proper installation.

Let me know please,
Jeff

Jeff,

I did as you requested - restarted my computer, turned off virus scan, turned off PestPatro, don't have a firewall, reinstalled 3.6.22. The problem still exists exactly as before. By the way, this is not an earth shaking problem and I don't mind if you shelf it for now.

I thought you might be interested in this tidbit. I still have BD 3.5.56 on my computer so I started that up and repeated the test. It works fine, i.e., I can get a mammal list or bird list or whatever without entering anything in the location field. In other words, the problem started when I upgraded from 3.5 to 3.6.
