This error appeared this morning when I tried to start BD - runtime error 1004 with 'unknown' beneath it. I downloaded a runtime 3.6 and the error persists. I suspect I may have erased someting when I deleted duplicate files on my PC using WinXP manager. I really would like to get the program up and running again, thanks, Alan

Hello Alan,

I have never seen those programs cause anything but trouble. My recommendation - never use them.

Not sure what "I downloaded a runtime 3.6..." means, but the solution should be as simple as re-running the 3.6 installation (Network Installation link) from the Downloads page on this site.

If any problems continue, let me know.

Jeff

Hi, thanks for your quick response. I did download from your installation link - didn't help, got the same error message.... nothing is simple!

Hi Alan,

Can you please give me the entire text of the error message?

Also, exactly when do you get this error? On starting BD? Do you see the splash window first (picture montage)? This might help me diagnose where things are going wrong.

Ok, the diary doesn't open at all. A rectangle pops up with a blue strip at the top "BDV 36",
In the rectangle- Run-time error '1004':
Unknown

OK

and a yellow triangle on the left with an exclamation mark in it.

Thanks.

Alan,

I suspect you have deleted several Windows-related system files. I assume you are running XP from your previous post. Is that correct?

Do you encounter any errors when you run the BD installation?

Did you actually run the installation or just download the installer file? I only ask because some folks don't realize that the installation must be run and not just be downloaded.

Please let me know on the questions above,

Jeff

Yes, I'm running XP,yes I ran the installation - no errors reported during the install. I suspect that what has been deleted has something to do with xl or database files.

Not sure what "xl" means.

But the fact that the error message lacks any content indicates a deeper system problem.

Did you take a restore point before using WinXP Mgr on your system? Do you have a backup of your system? If so, I highly recommend a recover from either to get back to ground zero. If not, then you should then consider putting your OS CD into the disk drive and choose the System Repair option to recover missing/corrupt system files.

That is the likely process from this point on. But let me know if you have any further questions or feel I can assist further.

Hi, I meant ms excel files. I checked the recovery points and don't have any, which is odd as I did create some. I have a backup of the drives with Norton Ghost from about a month ago but am unsure what to restore as I am reluctant to restore the entire C drive as everything else works and I don't want to mess things up further with changes to what has been updated since then....

I would be very surprised if nothing else on your system was messed up. This is a systemic error and indicates problems with your system - not Birder's Diary. If BD installs without errors, then it should run or you should get an error message that means something. You are not getting either.

I cannot recommend a particular file or set of files to restore. At this point, I would recommend using the System Repair option on your operating system CD.

Hi, You are probably fed up with all of this, me to. What I have done is downloaded the program from your site to her PC running Vista. It opens up and, seems fine but is blank of entries of course. If I copy all the files and subdirectories in my program into her copy of Birder's on her PC - I have no reason to think those files are corrupted - should that do the trick or is there something I need to do other than just copy them?

TIA Alan

Hi Alan,

All you need is the ".../Birder's Diary/data/database.mdb" file from the corrupt system. Copy it to the same place on the new machine.

Please see this article on moving BD to a new computer.

Hi, Nothing is easy:I get a db error that it is already opened exclusively by another user,or you need permission to use its data.
What else can go wrong here?

Hi Alan,

The ReadOnly flag is probably set on the database file. Browse to /Birder's Diary/data/ in windows explorer. Select the "database.mdb" file and right-click on it; choosing Properties. Look to see if the Read Only checkbox is checked. If so, uncheck it and try BD again.

Let me know,

Jeff

Depending on how BD gets started under Win 7, I sometimes receive that message unless I rightclick and "run as administrator".

I am sure it is something that I have in the wrong folder.

Steve

Hi (hic) Jeff - I don't remember if I replied to you or not; too much celebrating St Patrick's day at the local pub. The Diary is up and running thanks to you. The thing that surprised me was the various windows all over the place (at least it seemed like that) at start up. It wasn't at all obvious as I remember it when I first installed it years ago...it took a while to get them placed correctly.
Thank you very much for all your help - I certainly appreciate it.

Alan
