Subject: Compare Versions Error in Installing Birder's Diary v 3

Please help! My computer had a virus and it required me to wipe it clean and reinstall all of my software.   I was able to install TBS Birds of NA v.2.5, and also Birds of NA v.3.5.4.  (I like having both of them for various reasons).  No problem so far.  Then I tried to install Birder's Diary v 3, and it does not get very far at all in the installation process. It gives me an error "Invalid call to compare versions.  One or both parameters have not been provided versionA=versionB=3.1.3. " I tried rebooting my computer and tried again but I still get the same error.  I am using Windows XP.  Thank you for your help!

Hi Joni,

Can I assume that you have version 3.0 of BD (as opposed to 3.5 or 3.6)?

Back in 3.0, BD and Birds of NA used to be tied at the hips. Not anymore.

I think, the key will be to remove Birds of NA - both versions - and then install BD v3.0. Then install Birds of NA again. The BD v3.0 installation could not resolve the new v3.5.4 version of Birds of NA. Or, you can upgrade to v3.6 and avoid that error completely and get new features etc.

Thank you for the fast response. Yes I have Birder's Diary 3.0.  I just uninstalled all of them, rebooted my machine, and tried installing BD 3.0 again and still get the same error. Ack!

Note I also tried resetting my restore point in Windows to a few days ago, and even then, I still got the same error.

After removing everything, check to see if "C:\Program Files\Thayer Birding Software\" still exists. I think this may still exist after an uninstall and that a database exists down in the /data directory. It is this check against the version of the database that is probably causing the problem. If that is there, make sure you keep a copy of your BD backup/database and delete the "\Thayer Birding Software" directory tree completely. They retry the BD installtion only. And see if it doesn't work. It should then.

Hi Jeff.  Well you were right. The unistall process in Windows still left plenty of junk behind. But I deleted it all, and still got the same error when I tried to reinstall.  I deleted everything again, restarted the computer, and this time decided to try to reinstall BD to C:.  (I have a partition and usually install all of my software on D.  This time I just let it install where it wanted to, which was C.  It worked!  I also successfully installed both versions of Birds of NA, and even was able to re-uprade 3.5 to 3.5.4.

Now the only problem is that BD is asking me to re-register.  I selected "hardware changes" as the reason and entered my initial password.  It says "The password doesn't match the one used when the license was registered".  I know it is the right password as I wrote it down and kept it with the software CD.

I don't think I need to reregister the BNA software so I think I am ok with those.

Hi Joni,

Glad the new installation worked. I was going to suggest installing to a different location next.

Now, in order to activate your V3.0 license, please go to the Product Info => Upgrading from 2.x or 3.0 page on this site. At the very bottom is a file/program to download and run that will activate your license.
