My computer malfunctioned and had to be reset to a time prior to my upgrading to BD 3.649, so I lost the BD program (my data files are on a back up).  I downloaded BD 3.649 again, and since I have Widows 7 I attempted to initiate it using the recommended Windows 7 procedure (i.e. right click the icon and log on as administrator) but I got an error message:  RTE #48:  Error in loading DLL.  Haven't been able to find anything on the forums about this.  Help, please.

Hi Bob,

Sounds like an installation error. It should have mentioned the "DLL" that it could not load.

In either case, re-installing BD to the default location (C:\Birder's Diary\) on 7, should have no problems. Re-install from an Admin-priv'd account and let me know if that doesn't fix it. If it does not, please give me the entire content of the error message. It should list the file.

Thanks,

Jeff

Thanks, Jeff, this time it loaded correctly, but now I have been unable to load my backup into the program.  BD can't find the backup and apparently I was not able to type in the correct file location.  The file is located in my documents folder, and I also have it on a DVD using Windows 7 backup.  Now every time I try to open BD I get the message saying 'Could not find the file C:\Birder's Diary\data\database\mdb.  Please copy a backup into this directory.'   I haven't been able to do this either (OK I'm not very competent with this sort of stuff)  Can you give me some suggestions on how to proceed?

Hi Bob,

If you open Windows Explorer (My Computer) can you locate a copy of your backup with that?

If so, just select it, right-click it and choose Copy. Then navigate to "C:\Birder's Diary\data\", right-click in that directory and choose Paste. Now it will put a copy of your backup in the right place.

BD looks for a file in that location named "database.mdb". Please rename your backup file (right-click on the backup file and choose "Rename") to that name if not already done. NOTE: depending on your settings Windows (I absolutely hate this feature) will hide the extension (e.g. ".mdb") from you. Brilliant. So when you rename it, you really end up renaming it to "database.mdb.mdb". So, if when you look at the name of your backup file in Windows Explorer and it doesn't show the ".mdb" part, you can assume it is hiding the extension. So, just rename the file to "database".

Let me know please.

Jeff

Thank you , Jeff, that worked and my backup file loaded correctly and everything is there.  However, I seem to go from one problem to another:  I changed the backup file name as you suggested, but now when I try to back up again to C:\Documents\Birder's Diary|database.mdb windows says that file path doesn't exist.  I'm going to buy an external hard drive for backing up, but meantime how do you recommend I back up?

You are just gettig the pathname wrong.

Simply use the "Browse for backup file" button (see below) to open a browser window and select the location for your backup.
