I am in the 30 day trial period.  Upon closing the window after backing up, I get the message: Run-Time error '3031'  Not a valid password.  Upon hitting the OK buttom I am taken completely out of the program.  When I open the program again thing seem to work ok.

Why is this happening?

Hi,

Interesting. I have not seen that one before that I remember. Can I assume you are running v3.6.49? (You could have downloaded and installed an earlier version as they are available on the site.)

What version of Windows are you running? (e.g. XP, Vista, 7)

32-bit or 64-bit?

Are you running this in virtual pc software (e.g. on a MAC using Parallels)?

Are you in an admin-prived account?

Let's start here.

In either case, I don't think there is any possibility of program or data corruption; just a weird error. Almost sounds as if you may have old versions of the Jet Database libraries (system files that interface to the Access database used by BD).

Let me know please,

Jeff

I am running v3.6.49 with database v3.7.4.  My version of Windows is XP.  I am not sure whether it is 32 or 64 bit.  I am not running vitual pc software.  I do not know about the admin prived account.  I have a newer laptop but have not had a chance to see if the same error is occuring.

Let me know if you have a solution.

Hi,

Sorry I didn't get to this yesterday - it slipped by my radar.

I cannot explain this. You state that you get this after completing the backup and then closing the final window to close the program - right? Then you get the error?

I can say that you can safely ignore this error. Why it is happening I do not know.

If you get time and are interested, try doing a backup manually (not on Exit) by choosing File | Backup/Restore from the menu. After the backup completes, close the backup window. Any error? If not, then close the application (and say no to the Backup on Exit). Any error here? Just trying to isolate where the error may be coming from exactly.

When I choose to backup from the File menu is when I am getting the error.  When I exit the program and backup no error occurs.

I am also getting the same error on my newer laptop which runs Windows Vista.

I read your original post incorrectly. Yes - this is a known issue with MS Access. You must exit and restart BD after doing a backup. V3.7 forces this. If your perform the backup and then exit BD, you will not get the error message. Then restart and no problems.

I have been using "backup" to transfer my database from the notebook I carry when travelling to my desktop when I get home. I just returned from a trip to Montana, and when I opened the updated database on the desktop, the lifelist counts at the bottom of the screen have disappeared. Any idea where they went?

Never mind. I closed the program and re-started and there they were.

Great. Because I had no idea where they could have gone.

Just got back from a birding trip to Greece. Backed up database on notebook and transferred to desktop. When I tried "restore" on the desktop, I got the message "permission denied." I had no problem before the trip transferring the date from the desktop to the notebook. Any idea what is wrong?

Hi,

When exactly do you get this error? After you click the Restore button on the Backup/Restore window? Or after the restore is complete and you attempt to use BD?

Check the properties on your /birder's diary/data/database.mdb file and see if the ReadOnly property is checked.

OK. I just checked, and the "read-only" is not checked. I get the message "permission denied" before completing the restore function. Yesterday afternoon I tried replacing the entire database on the desktop with a copy of the one from the laptop. Now it works if I click "Run as administrator" when I open the program. If I fail to click "Run as administrator" all of the sightings from the trip disappear. I am wondering how that can be, if there is only one database?

Hi Jim,

I am guessing yu are on Vista or Win7; and you have BD installed to "C:\Program Files\Birder's Diary" instead of "C:\Birder's Diary".

Is this correct?

If so, BD needs to be installed into "C:\Birder's Diary" only. Vista and Win7 do funny things (the sort of thing you are experiencing) if one installs programs under "\program files" - go figure.

Let me know please,

Jeff

On another thought Jim - are you getting UAC (user account control) messages when you attempt to do this?

As a possible workaround, can you please exit BD and restart it by right-clicking on the icon and choosing "run as admin" and see if the error goes away when you attempt to restore.

The program works fine as long as I right click and choose "run as admin" I'm wondering if it is worth the trouble to re-install to the alternate folder you suggested. I don't have time to mess with that today. Maybe next week.
