I would like to delete countries and continents. Is there a simplier way that by selecting each and right mouse click to delete?

Very time consuming. I am sure this has been addressed somewhere but my searching turned up nothing.

Thanks

Hi Sharon,

You can modify the locations tree anyway you want - but why would you? I would not recommend it.

Tell me what your trying to accomplish and I can give you a better way than deleting the location hierarchy.

Jeff

Hi Jeff
I see this old post of Sharon's whereby she wanted to delete various continents and countries. I too wish to do this. I have managed to delete most countries however I cannot for the life of me delete all the USA states. My reason being is that when I compile a checklist .. every country was appearing in the checklist. I want only Australasia and not the rest of the world. I know I can choose to modify the checklist to a certain location .. but sometimes I forget to to this. It annoys me. So have been going through ever so slowly my Australian Tax. list and manually deleting each and every state from the check list.

It was strange how I could delete all countries eg: european asian etc... but when I get to the USA and Canada I can't. Each time I try to delete a location; say Alabama I am faced with ABA Threshold Reporting is Linked to this location. You cannot delete it.

Hi Jude,

You cannot delete those locations. I highly recommend not deleting other continent/country locations either. There is simply no need to do such and it may adversely affect many BD functions.

You say that "when you compile a checklist, every country was appearing in the checklist". Can I assume that by "compiling a checklist" you mean creating a Checklist Report using the Reporting window and the Checklist TAB? The solution here is to simply always specify the location you want in the location field, e.g. Australasia. It remembers your setting and it will be there the next time you bring the window up. Nothing for you to forget.

That is the best advice I can give on this one. Removing locations from the location tree is not a recommended solution here.

If you want to restore your location tree to its default initial BD settings, simply import the attached file below using the Import/Export window in BD, and the Locations TAB. Recommended. It will not remove or alter existing locations you have setup. Just restore the rest of the World in the location tree for locations you have deleted.

Let me know if I can assist further.

Jeff

Naughty  me ...

I have now downloaded and imported back into BD all locations.

Worked perfectly ... and did not effect my locations at all.

I had been using the checklist editor  (right hand side of menu) and typing in eg: Northern Mallard ...    and I would get heaps of countries ...   so I was manually deleting these from the list.    So I decided to delete the countries from the locations folder.  Which worked for many countries, just not the USA/Canada states.   I've since thought about it and of course I didn't need to delete the countries at all ... just delete from the checklist editor.

Anyway ... all's back to normal now

Many thanks.

Jude

Hi Jude,

But Northern Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) [aka Mallard] does exist in all of those locations. So, what are you trying to solve by removing some of the locations that A. platyrhynchos is attached to?

Just wondering if there isn't another way of accomplishing your goal. Typically, removing locations that are properly associated with a thing is not the preferred method.

Take care,

Jeff

I agree Jeff .. I should not be removing them. I've just discovered that when accessing the Checklist all I need do is enter a bird eg: Long-toed Stint and then use the Loc-filter and just use Australasia ... then I don't get all those 48 Lower States and Canada etc..

And whilst on the subject of the "thing checklist"
If I have a bird recorded as being in "Fogg Dam" then I do not need to record the Northern Territory in the thing checklist as well.
The fact that Fogg Dam is already in my location list as being a child of the Northern Territory covers me if I wish to have a checklist for the Northern Territory only ?

That is correct Jude.

Everything in BD (except for the Checklist Editor) bubbles-up the location information. For example, if you ask for a checklist of North America - even though there are no things associated with this location by default, you will get all things associated with any location that is a descendant of North America. e.g. All things associated with Alabama, etc. etc.

But, for reasons of necessity, in the Checklist Editor, if you ask for all things associated with location 'North America' you get a blank list, because you need to be able to edit a specific location without all descendants bubbling up.
