I recently upgraded my hard drive to give more memory. I have a Mac and run BD on parallels (When will you have a mac-friendly version????) and had to re-install the parallels. The first time I tried to restart BD, it worked fine, except Petey's animation was a bit weird as he had a square box around him instead of a transparent background. The second time I tried to start BD, I got two error messages right after each other. The first was "Error with License Control. ErrNum=13, Description =." Then a second error: "Error with License control. ErrNum=18, Description =."
Please help. |

| I should also add that after I click "OK" for each of these errors, BD starts up, but the only icon that is active on the menu bar is the "Exit" icon. Petey shows up, but I can't navigate any of the menu options except to exit. |

Hi Bruce,
On Windows, after you do a hardware upgrade - like adding disk - the licensing software thinks it is a different computer, converts the license to a demo copy and requires you to go through the license process again - a fairly painless process.
It is possible that this is the same problem, confused by several layers of translation (disk, Mac, Parallels, BD license Software) .
My advice would be to re-license it and see what happens.
Edit added.
Oops - as I reread your note I realized that you cannot get to the menu - so my advice is of no help. Sorry

| Right. Any idea how I can get the computer to ask me to relicense it? |

| Did you reinstall BD after you reinstalled Parallels? Your note does not specify that - I think. |

| I did as you suggested, Jeff, and deleted my old BD and uploaded it again from the website (my CD has some kind of error that doesn't work anymore. But when I restart BD, I get the same exact error messages originally described on this forum thread. This is very frustrating and I'm about ready to give up. I've had to go through similar problems every time I upgrade my computer, my parallels, my hard drive. I really wish you had a Mac version. If I didn't have all my life lists on this program I would have given up long ago. Please, is there no easy way to do this? |

| OK, now I really give up. I finally, after some hours, got rid of the faulty BD and uploaded a new one. But when I tried the restore function using the database I carefully saved in 3 different places, I get the error: Database Error! You do not have the necessary permissions to use the 'C:\ProgramFiles\Birder's Diary\data\database.mdb' object. Have your system administrator or the person who created the object establish the appropriate permissions for you. Contact Technical Support at http://www.jonestc.com/forums. |

| Additional information, before it shuts me out, it gives me the error: Run-time error '3078': The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot find the input table or query 'TaxonomyList'. Make sure it exists and that its name is spelled correctly. |

And then it tells me again that my password is incorrect.
Seriously, Jeff, is there any way I can salvage my life list and upload it to a more user friendly database, like eBird? Birder's Diary has been good to me until I got a Mac a few years ago and since then has been awkward. The only reason I maintain Parallels on my Mac is for BD. I've spent years keeping my records on BD and will be sick now to have lost them. |

Hello Bruce,
I should be able to get BD working for you on your MAC.
What version are you running? By any chance, did you download v3.6 and only have a license for v3.5 or earlier? I don't find you in my online store database - so perhaps you purchased from a distributor (e.g. Thayer).
When will you be able to let me onto your MAC over the internet? It is a simple process.

Jeff,
I will be in my office with DSL internet access to my Mac through the afternoon (until 5 CST). Anytime is good. You can contact me via email at drbruce@iastate.edu or call my office at 515 294 1246 to let me know when you are available. That's the most direct routes to contact me. I can check this forum periodically, as an alternative. You say the time and I'll be ready.
Thanks,
BWC |
