01/25/2012 10:35 PM Alert

This is the first problem I've had with BD in years, but it's a serious one & I hope someone can help.

1. "View & edit sightings" window

2. Select sighting for editing

3. Click "edit" button, bringing up "edit sighting" window

4. Click "comments" on "edit sighting" window in order to expand it for data entry/editing

5. "View & edit sightings" window freezes & I can only unfreeze it by exiting & restarting program.

6. As the program closes, I catch a glimpse of an unexpanded phantom window at the lower corner.

I think the problem may have been caused by my absent mindedly trying to open a 2nd "comments" window before closing the 1st, though I'm not sure about this.

So, what to do to set things right?

Here are various technical data in case they're of use:

BD program & DB 3.6.49

Windows XP5.1.2600 SP3

I think the solution to your problem may be a registry update.

I tried to replicate your condition so I could check the registry. Unfortunately, I was unable to duplicate it.

I am sure that Jeff will have the solution

Hi,

When you click on a sighting (or multiple) and open the Edit Sighting window, the 'View & Edit Sightings' window locks. And will only unlock when you close the Edit Sighting window. Is this what you are experiencing? And, if while on the Edit Sighting Window, you click the Comments button to open the Comment Editor, then the Edit Sighting Window is locked.

So, you have both the View&Edit and the Edit window locked in this case. And if you cannot access the Comment Editor window to close it, then yes, both previous windows are locked.

If, when you open the Comment Editor, you do not see it, it may be off the screen OR minimized at the bottom left of your main BD window.

If it is minimized, then simply look for the window icon at the lower left of your main BD window and restore it.

If it materialized off the main BD window, then your main BD window will show scroll bars on the bottom and/or right. Use those scroll bars to scroll the comment window into view. Once in View be sure to move it onto the main area before closing it, so this doesn't happen again. (Note: v3.7 has code that ensures it shows up visibly even if the last time you closed it, it was off the main visible area.)

Let us know please,

Jeff

Found & restored phantom window as per Jeff's suggestion & all is now well again. Many thanks to both of you for the speedy responses --superlative service as always.

Great news, Fred!

And if you can ever reproduce how you created it, let us know. I certainly could not.

What window was it?

Thanks for the update Fred.

Steve - I think you cannot reproduce it because you are trying on v3.7.

3.7 has code that moves off-screen windows into the main area if they try to come up that way.

To reproduce this on 3.6, open the comment editor, then move it down below the normal viewing area of your main BD window by dragging. Then close it.

Now try to open that comment editor again, it opens, but down where you closed it last time. Most users won't notice that the scroll bars got added to the main window; and so it appears that the editor did not show; and to boot - now the edit window and the view/edit window are locked.

You're right - I remember once I managed to "throw" a window off to the side and i took me a while to find it.

I also - now - remember that the issue was fixed.

But for the life of me, I could not tell you how long ago or what version it occurred in.

Good News!

Steve
