Jeff,

 

When upgrading Birder's Diary I get the following error "Could not communicate with network server, error 26." I have the option of aborting or retrying. The latter does not solve the problem and the error message appears again.

Hello Roland,

Can you try again please. Perhaps the server was overloaded at the time. Many folks are installing the update today. I just tried and it went without error.

Please let us know if successful.

If it still is not working for you, could you please let us know what kind of internet connection you have (e.g. dial-up, dsl, cable, etc). Perhaps do a simple speed test at www.dslreports.com/speedtest to determine if your internet connection is having any trouble.

We have seen this before during heavy load, and hopefully it was only temporary.

Jeff,

Thanks for the prompt reply. I tried to download BD at 5:30 AM (MST) this morning with no luck, same error. I tested the download speed over my dsl wireless internet connection with the following results:

Trial 1: 1.31 Mbps download     0.72 Mbps upload

Trial 2: 1.22 Mbps download     0.656 Mbps upload - different test site

Trial 3: 1.27 Mbps download     0.687 Mbps upload - same site as trial 2

Hi Roland,

What operating system are you using?

Do you have a Software firewall?

Does it happen on both Network Installation and Single File Setup?

Did you try downloading another file - like the documentation?

Well - dog gone it Roland.

This new update has been installed over a hundred times since yesterday now. No one else has reported this. So I wonder what makes your situation different.

Your test speeds seem more than adequate. And consistent.

Can you please try downloading the single file setup. Click on it and save it to your local computer disk. If it downloads succesfully, then simply run it from your saved copy. The download may take 30 minutes or more.

Let's try that before we get into too much detailed troubleshooting.

On futher review, the "set-up" screen says the program has downloaded successfully but the problem arises in the installation. When the installation program is at C\Birders Diary\BDloactionsUpdate.csv the problem consistently occurs. I have some obligations to attend to, so I will have to delay trying your above suggestions until later this afternoon.

Problem solved when I turned off the firewall. Up-dated BD downloaded successfully.

Thanks much for letting us know. It really helps when other users with the same problem search here and find the solution that you have posted.

It appears that SteveO was spot-on with one of his suggestions.
