Onychorhyncus coronatus mexicanus ([Northern] Royal Flycatcher) is associated with the "thing" Atlantic Royal-Flycatcher in BD, whereas Onychorhyncus mexicanus is associted with the "thing" Northern Royal-Flycatcher. But O. c. mexicanus is the same taxon as O. mexicanus (I think). Should they not be associated with the same "thing"?

Hello Lars,

You should never imply any rationality to the underlying thing names in BD.

Using the Rosetta Stone to examine these relationships we find...

  • O. coronatus is always attached to the internal BD thing "Amazonian Royal-Flycatcher";
    1. in Clements 2008 it has the common name of "Amazonian Royal-Flycatcher";
    2. in Clements 2008 6.3.2 it has the common name of "Royal Flycatcher"
  1. O. coronatus mexicanus is attached to internal BD thing "Atlantic Royal Flycatcher" with a common name of "Royal Flycatcher [Northern]" in 6.3.2
    1. in Clements 2008, O. c. swainsoni is atached to BD thing "Atlantic Royal Flycatcher" with a common name of "Amazonian Royal Flycatcher".

So from Clements 2008 to Clements 6.3.2

  • thing "Amazonian Royal-Flycatcher" kept its sci name but changed the common name from "Amazonian Royal-Flycatcher" to "Royal Flycatcher".
  • thing "Atlantic Royal Flycatcher" changed common name and scientific name as per above.

Now I see your issue and question Lars. O. c. swainsoni switched to O. c. mexicanus in 6.3.2. But O. mexicanus got lumped in 6.3.2 - so there is no more O. mexicanus. They all exist under O. coronatus.

Clear as mud?

SteveO - anything to add to this?

Jeff
