Hi Jeff,

BD is going great. Running into my first mystery in a while. Here's the summary:

  1. created new thing
  2. added sightings based on that new thing
  3. it shows up in reports
  4. does NOT show up in View/Edit for the date/place/taxonomy it belongs to

(Note: about 30 other sightings show up on that day .. but this one thing does not)

Please advise.

_ Tadas

HI Tadas,

My guess would be that you are not specifying the taxonomic list which contains this new Thing in the View/Edit setup window.

Using the Rosetta Stone feature (Advanced button), you can enter your thing in the Thing field and see which taxonomic lists reference it.

Let me know,
Jeff

We need to try something else.
Rosetta Stone confirms the two taxonomic lists this species is on.
I used the correct lists and get a display of everything I saw that day except the one mystery thing.
Happy to send you screen shots or reports if it helps solve this.

HI Tadas,

What would help best is to:
1. Backup your database
2. ZIP it
3. Upload it to me via the "Support >> File Upload" page on this site.

Then post here with instructions on how to exactly see this sighting you have entered. And how to reproduce the problem. Just walk me through the steps that demonstrate the problem please.

I will be able to load up your database and reproduce it.

Thanks,
Jeff

OK Jeff,

1 - Zipped file uploaded to you

2 - How to repordoudce the problem (2 examples of same issue)

Mystery Entry #1

Species: Caribbean Reef Octopus

Date: 29 july 2010

Locn: Playita del Condado

Taxn Lists:  (1) Reef Creatures and (2) Fish & Creatures Caribbean

Trial A: Using “Reports” function & either taxonomic list; create report for 29july2010

Result A: species list WITH the Caribbean Reef Octopus on the list

Trial B: Using “View/Edit” function & either taxonomic list; search for 29july2010 entries

Result B: lots of entries show up but NO Caribbean Reef Octopus

Mystery Entry #2

Species: Spotted Sea Hare

Date: 26aug2010

Locn: The Fish Tank

Taxn Lists:  (1) Reef Creatures and (2) Fish & Creatures Caribbean

Trial A: Using “Reports” function & either taxonomic list; create report for 26aug2010

Result A: species list WITH the Spotted Sea Hare on the list

Trial B: Using “View/Edit” function & either taxonomic list; search for 26aug2010 entries

Result B: lots of entries show up but NO Spotted Sea Hare

Let me know if you need anything else or want me on the phone at any time.

Resolving this is very important to me because of the method I use to enter sightings ... and I am glad you're on the case Doctor! Thanks - Tadas

Hi Tadas,

Thank you for going to the trouble. However, when I follow your instructions, I see the specified sightings in all instances.

I think the key here is that you have some setting on the View/Edit Setup window that you are overlooking and is therefore excluding the sightings in question. My recommendation is to click the reset button on that window, then select either tax list (I used "Reef Creatures"), only enter the begin date and click Continue. And there it is.

One question, based on how you specified your dates above, is it possible that your computer is set to non-US date style of mm/dd/yyyy - or that you are specifying the date in the wrong order when you use the date control on the setup window? Just guessing.

OK. If I leave off the end date ... the octopus shows up. When I have an end date (same day or next day), the octopus is absent. Now, I entered this octopus at a later date, as I do with many sightings. Why? because I take photographs and enter later identified Things when I can. That is also why it is important for me to see only the Things I have already entered for that specific date, to be sure I do not created redundant entries.
Why will "later" entries not show up with the original "batch" of entires. NOTE: The same thing happened with the Spotted Sea Hare, and I entered that same day but a few hours later when I recalled seeing that creature.
So, my dilemma is, how can I get BD to show me ALL & ONLY the Things entered on a specific date?
Thanks for your help with this!
Tadas

Whoa. Now it seems to be working.
I don't understand why, it didn't before, but it is working as I hoped.
I'll let you knwo if it happens again. I believe we are OK now.
Thanks for all your help and have a terrific weekend!

Thanks Tadas. I could not reproduce the issue. BD, by default, will append midnight to any end-date without a time specified. Not sure why it wasn't coming up before. But let me know if you can reproduce it please.
