Hi Mark,

This has been discussed in numerous threads already. I will summarize here.

When producing checklist data (data that ties a bird/thing to a location [e.g. country, continent, state, etc]), Clements has ~10k species and ~21k subspecies. The task of assigning all 10k species to their respective countries/states is very daunting and took many months to translate from book/text format and get into a database. The task of doing the same for the ~21k subspecies was beyond the ability of Pete and myself to do individually. But, since we had all the data for each species in the database, it was decided to just assign all subspecies to every location associated with the parent species. This was done easily and quickly with a database query in minutes - what would have taken a year or more to do the other way.

So, what you have for subspecies (in 99% of the case) is that they share the same location data with their parent species.

That is why you are seeing what you are seeing. The BOU tax list comes with a checklist update that correctly sets subspecies locations for the UK only.

Hi Jeff,

Sorry I had missed this. Makes perfect sense. I had worked it out with regard to the BOU list.

When building a new WP list I'll dear this in mind.

Regards

Mark
