Hello Bruce,

Thanks for letting me onto your system. I found none of the problems you mentioned above.

I did find:

  • that your memory stick copy of your BD database is corrupted - causing all sorts of weird issues.
  • However, the database in your C:\Birder's Diary\data\ directory is just fine and works - check to make sure it has all of your data.
  • Also, weird stuff happens when I try to activate your user license on that system. It accepts it, but then the next time I start it up, it says it is unlicensed. This indicates some sort of antivirus/malware software might be keeping the licensing software from writing to the registry. I have seen this before. What kind of antivirus/malware etc are you running on this system exactly? Please name all such related software.
  • I upgraded you to v3.6 and you should continue to use that now instead of v3.5.

So, BD is up and running, it just thinks you are in Demo mode. So let's address this via letting me know what antivirus etc software you are running. The solution is probably to disable all of them and then attempt to license BD.

Let me know please,

Jeff

Jeff,

I'm glad that there was a non-corrupted version of my database!

My data appears to be all there (my life counts are accurate).

I have the same licensing problem, even though I enter the ID and passwords I got when I purchased the software. I have no antivirus or malware installed (just had our IT guys double check that).

I deleted v3.5 entirely from the system (I tried to open it without thinking right after I got your message--not thinking it was 3.5 instead of 3.6 which had a different icon) and got the same error message that I didn't have licensing permission. But then I tried 3.6 and all is well--except it doesn't remember the licensing after I turn it off and then on again.

Any ideas?

Hi Bruce,

I have only seen this a couple times before and it was antivirus both times. Once the antivirus software was disabled, the problem went away and the user could properly license BD. Other than that, I have not seen this problem.

Are you logged on with Admin privileges to Windows? I don't know if that would matter, but if you are, then that should rule out any privilege issue. But you never know.

It will be interesting to see if the Number of Demo Days left goes down to 29 tomorrow. Let me know on that one please. It is at 30 now.

It is funny that you were at first having these License file errors when you first reported here. But now that does not exist, but the licensing won't detect a valid license. Weird. I know that BD works fine under Parallels and Windows 7 on dozens of other customer systems. So the question is, what is different about this installation?

Let me know about Admin above.

Jeff

Hi Bruce,

When you start BD today - how many days does it say you have left in your demo?

Also - are you logged in with Admin privs?

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeff,

Countdown is staying at 30 days. I do have admin privileges. The notice that I need to register and have only 30 days to go keeps popping up each time. Any ideas? Otherwise seems to be working fine.

HI Bruce,

Well - this is certainly weird and should not be happening. But, you are good to go. Just ignore the "demo message" at startup.

I can't imagine what is causing this. I have seen it once or twice in 10+ years.

Jeff
