I have added a new feature to Checklist Import which readily allows imports from sources that simply supply a list of Common Names based on a given taxonomic list for a specified locaiton.

The Problem
Birder's Diary currently only allows for importing checklist data that is in BD csv format. This format includes BD internal thing descriptions instead of taxonomic common names. And, as most of you know, these do not always match. So some work is required to massage the data from the original source into BD format.

Often, you can find a source that simply contains a list of birds (in textual format) for a given location (e.g. Colorado) based on the common names from a specific taxonomic authority (e.g. ABA).

Now BD (v3.6.27) can import that file as is with no effort. This should work well, for example, as Pete obtains lists of birds from the various state authorities. No further work will be required other than to import that file.

Notice the new Import frame at the bottom of the Checklist window.

You will need to specify the taxonomic list to match names agains; and

specify the Location that this import is for.

Typically, you would
1. Check "Analyze data...", and
2. Overwrite Locations (assuming your list you are importing is complete)

Starting v3.6.28, this new feature is greatly enhanced.

Given:

a) a specified tax list to match common or scientific names against
b) a location to import to

This feature will parse any text file and extract the list of names (common or scientific; even subspecies) and build a checklist for updating the data in Diary.

For example, if your checklist data is in a PDF file, you can select the text (even if in multiple columns) and paste it into a text editor (e.g. Notepad). Then save the contents to a file and use this new feature to import that file.

I have tried this against PDF files, copy/paste functions from various web sites, etc. and it is working 100%.

As long as you can get a list of names, in any format (e.g. multiple columns, run-on paragraphs, with extraneous data) into a text file, this new feature will import it.

Be sure to use the Analyze checkbox to confirm the data after import but before making the changes to your database.

Then, you can export that data using the Checklist export feature and post the results here. That will make it a Diary import file which contains more information.

So, the process as I am envisioning this ability to build Diary checklist accuracy and completeness is this:

1) import alternate source for checklist data using this new feature
2) export using checklist export feature
3) post results of export here

Comments?

Jeff,

I see checklist data istarting to come in from all over, will someone monitor the accuracy of both the data and the format? Last thing I need is someone's corrupted data.

I will be reviewing and authorizing the data. However, you can trust that anything from folks like Pete Thayer or Steve Olesen is spot-on.

Actually, with the volume coming in, I will probably only post if I find an issue. But I will personally review each and every one.

I would like folks who have the time and who have access to up-to-date information to comment on each posting I made.

I did the best I could with what I had, but I am guessing that 90% of what I posted can be improved upon.

Since most of the BD checklists being used were things I did five years ago, I thought I should at least make an effort to give folks a better "starting place."

Jeff - should I post a new upload once others have corrected the errors or should I simply edit the postings I made yesterday?

I would just post new if you have changes. Folks will know to look at the last post. This helps us keep a history.

Thanks much!

Jeff
