Hi Pete,
Glad to hear you are back from Colombia and safe.
Added the species you mentioned. Thanks.
As for updating the Birds for Kazikstan (spelled "Kazakhstan" for some reason in BD), the process couldn't be simpler for BD users. I just found a site online (http://www.birds.kz/taxonomye.html) just by Googling "Birds checklist kazikstan". I took that list and easily updated my checklist for Kazakhstan in BD. Here is the process.
- Locate web page with checklist of birds for region you are interested in. Best if it contains both common names and scientific names for higher quality name matching. See the page above that I used.
- Using your mouse, drag-select from the first name to the last name. I omitted the casual/vagrant ones at the bottom.
- Ctrl+C (Edit | Copy) the selection.
- Open NotePad on your system.
- Paste (Ctrl+V or Edit|Paste) your selection from the web page into your NotePad
- Now, save the file (e.g. C:\Birder's Diary\BirdsOfKazikstan.txt).
- Open the Import/Export window in BD (File | Import/Export)
- Select the Checklist TAB
- Fill it out as in the first picture below. Notice I have Ignore Subspecies checked as the data I found does not include subspecies.
- I filled in the location at the bottom of the screen for Kazakhstan and click the Import button next to that.
- Select the file from #6 above. And away it goes.
- Since I have Analyze data before import checked, I get the second screen below, letting me know which things it will be added to the checklist for Kazikstan, and which it will be removing. I can review this and override any of the changes individually or as a whole using this window. It wants to add 32 birds and remove 16.
- I choose to accept all specified changes and click Continue.
- Done.
I have updated my list of species for my specified location. No longer do you ever have to go on a trip and wonder if you checklist is current. Check the web, find the most appropriate resource and make sure your data is up to date.
As you can imagine, this is always changing and very hard for us to keep up to date. But, I would very strongly suggest that we are the most up-to-date in the world, by far. Why? Because we have these tools in BD that allow users around the world to constantly update their data and share it with us and other BD users. I am constantly getting updates from users around the world. And what they do, is, instead of providing a list of birds to add/remove from a certain location or a link to the web site they used, after they update their BD database, they then export that list using the same Import/Export form and post it here. Now I and other users can simply download and import that file, quickly and easily. All of my annual updates to tax lists contain a compilation of all of these user updates throughout the year.
Thanks Pete. And I hope this helps all.
