Hi there,

The dialect function gives me some troubles here:

I use v 3.6.49,

Clements-Cornell 2009 after updating from 2008,

for which I downloaded the German dialect.

Some German names are missing, e.g. "Elster" for pica pica. When looking for "Elster" using rosetta I only found pica hudsonia.

So I tried to fix it, but the video tutorial doesn't seem to fit to the new version and some errors later I gave up. Any ideas? Would be great, thanks in advance.

Yours

Matthias

Hi Matthias,

If you want to add a German name for Pica pica, one doesn't exist yet for this Eurasian Magpie (common English name used by Clements for this thing), then please use these steps.

  1. Open the Language/Region Editor (Dialect toolbar button)
  2. Select "German" for the List from the dropdown
  3. Click the Names... button to open the Name Editor
  4. In the Name field (it will accept thing names, common names, or scientific names), type "pica pica"
  5. Click the Find button (binoculars)
    1. If found, it will scroll it into view and highlight it.
    2. In this case, it is not found and it makes a funny noise.
    3. Type the name you want to use for this thing into the Common Name field (e.g. "Elster")
    4. Click the Add button
    5. Click the Ok button; it will rebuild the name list.
  6. Back at the Lang/Reg Editor window (#1 from above)
  7. Now, reapply the German name list to Clements.
    1. With the German list still selected in the List dropdown
    2. Select Clements from the Set Taxonomy dropdown
    3. click the Set Common Names button

That should do it.

Please let me know if you encounter any problems with this.

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

thank you for your recipe, which I tried to follow.

Unfortunately I had to stop at "5. Click the Find button (binoculars)" ... because there is no such button.
(And the list didn't show the bird I was looking for: "ruddy shelduck".)

Do you know what is wrong?

Thanks

Matthias

Hi Matthias,

No Binocular/Find button? Do you not see the same window below that I am showing in the screenshot? You are running version 3.6.49 - correct?

Jeff

GACK!  How can that possibly be?

Note that your text field is longer than it should be. I remember this being the way it was in an earlier (v3.0 or 3.5) version. Oh - wait a second, you definitely are not running v3.6.x. Notice the difference also in the label for the first field - "Thing" instead of "Name" as in my screen shot. Click on Help | About to see what version you are running.

You definitely have a license for 3.6. Please download and install that from the Downloads page on this site. This should install 3.6 into C:\Birder's Diary\ by default. If your older version (the one you are running in the screen shot above) is in a different directory, you will want to copy your "database.mdb" from the latter's "/data" directory into the 3.6 "/data" directory - overwriting the demo database.mdb placed there by the installation.

Let me know if you require more assistance on this.

Matthias,

Nevermind. I was looking at my v3.7 beta version. You have the right version. Very sorry for the wild goose chase.

So, my previous steps are ammended as such.

  1. Open the Language/Region Editor (Dialect toolbar button)
  2. Select "German" for the List from the dropdown
  3. Click the Names... button to open the Name Editor
  4. In the Name field (it will accept thing names, common names, or scientific names), type "pica pica"
  5. If in the list, the name will be auto-found as you type
    1. If found, it will scroll it into view and highlight it.
    2. In this case, it is not found and it makes a funny noise.
    3. Type the name you want to use for this thing into the Common Name field (e.g. "Elster")
    4. Click the Add button
    5. Click the Ok button; it will rebuild the name list.
  6. Back at the Lang/Reg Editor window (#1 from above)
  7. Now, reapply the German name list to Clements.
    1. With the German list still selected in the List dropdown
    2. Select Clements from the Set Taxonomy dropdown
    3. click the Set Common Names button

I got rid of most all auto-action-as-you-type fields as they caused user interaction problems too often.

Try this and let me know please.

Jeff

Dear Jeff,

I'm not able to type "pica pica" in that field. It always stops with the picazuro pigeon and doesn't accept the scientific name.

What seems even more mysterious to me: I cannot find the ruddy shelduck (to add the German name "Rostgans"). Rosetta tells me "ruddy shelduck" is the correct name of the thing "ruddy shelduck". But it doesn't show in the list of the names editor.

So I'm sorry to tell you that the steps above don't work.

Yours

Matthias

Hello Matthias,

Very sorry. Once again, testing this on v3.7 has caused me to give incorrect instructions. 3.7 allows you to enter thing name, common name, sci name. But, in 3.6, you can only enter the thing name.

So please enter "common magpie" instead. How do you know this is the thing name that you want to set? By using the Rosetta Stone and looking up the name you want to change.

Now, both "common magpie" and "ruddy shelduck" (which is the correct thing name) will not show in the grid when you type that name into the "Thing" field. This is your indication, per step 5.a above, that it is not in the list. So, proceed with step 5.b, as per the instructions. It will show in the grid after you type in the Common Name you want to use and click the ADD button.

Please let me know and very sorry for the length of time it has taken to get you on the right track.

Jeff

Dear Jeff,

it works, although the action "Set Common Names" always ends with this error:

and afterwards the program closes down, I have to change the "regedit False -> True" and restart.

As good as it gets ...?

But I don't have to do this on a daily basis ...

Matthias,

What do you mean about having to change "regedit False -> True"?

Does this "Set Common Names" error occur after the names have been changed to German? Can you check to see if all your German name changes have been set on your tax list?

What tax list are you resetting names on?

Thanks

Jeff

Dear Jeff,

by "regedit false -> true" I was refering to
http://www.birdersdiary.com/Support/ProductForums/tabid/75/forumid/2/postid/8740/view/topic/Default.aspx

The German name changes have been set, the error occurs after the blue index bar touches the right end of the field. (I hope my English is sufficient to explain what I observed).

Tax list: "Clements-Cornell 2009 after updating from 2008"

I am surprised that registry setting has an effect in this situation.

I am unable to reproduce your error Matthias. I used 3.6.49 and added Common Magpie to the German name list. And then applied it to Clements 6.4.1. No errors.

Hmmm. I wonder, by any chance do you have a blank name at the top of your German name list?

At least your German name changes are taking affect. If, after the error, you do not reset the registry setting, can you restart and use BD anyway? Or must you reset that registry setting? If the latter is true, then there is a name error in your database somewhere. If you upload your database to me (use Support => File Upload on this site), I will probably be able to fix it and return it to you.

Dear Jeff,

I don't have to change the registry value, I do it to avoid any further trouble.

I don't know whether I have a blank name, but I uploaded the zip file.

Thanks for your support

Thanks Matthias. I downloaded your database and was able to reproduce the error. Now let me see if I can't isolate the problem in your database.

Stay tuned.
