06/07/2010 8:05 PM Alert

I have had Birders Diary Version 2.5 (from 1998) for a long time. I have entered a lot of sightings, which I'd naturally like to carry forward to my new computer with Windows 7. The version I have ran fine on Windows XP Home Edition, but won't install on my new computer (compatibility problems, it says).

I have a file called  "BIRD_BCK.MDB" which I pulled off the old computer (which I presume has all my sightings on it (right?); its size is 672KB. I also have a floppy disk with the same file name on it.

If I need to purchase your new version of Birders Diary, I hope I'll be able to use all my sightings on it.

I am pleased to see that Birders Diary still carries on; I was afraid that over the years it had met its demise.I am an active birder in the Tampa area, and have met Pete Thayer at various shows in the past. I hope this version is a continuation of that product, so my old data may be recognized by it. I also have "Birds of North America version 2.0 (1996) - is there an updated version of this as well?

I have tried downloading your product and placing a renamed copy of my backup into the 'data' file. The program doesn't recognise it properly. Can it be modified in some way? I don't know what else to do, since I can neither email nor call you!! PLEASE respond!!

Hi,

I am also a long-time user, but I have stayed current. I am not surprised that BD2.5 will no longer run on Windows 7.

I had kept 2.5 on my old XP machine, but when I moved to Win7 I never bothered to try to install it.

The BD2.5 and BD3 databases are diifferent, and BD3 does not recognize the old database.

When Jeff returns, I am sure he will explain the options that you have to convert your sightings to the new format.

BIRD_BAK is the old backup. Do you also have a copy of BIRD_DAT.MDB? I believe it is slightly easier to recover sightings from the full database.

Regards,
Steve

Hello,

Sorry for my delayed response. Out of town unexpectedly.

Please see the page on this site concerning upgrading from v2.5. Yes - this is still the same BD as v2.5 and yes your data is still good. But the format changed to support more features in v3.0 and your 2.5 database will not work without a conversion. The page on this site that you want to read is Product Info >> Upgrading from 2.x or 3.0. This should answer all your questions. But let me know if you have any further questions.

Jeff

Jeff,

I just purchased my license, downloadad BDiary v3.6, and activated it. I also tried to upload my old BIRD.DAT to you; my first try MIGHT have been the un-zipped version. I then uploaded the proper one (ie zipped), and await your confirmation. Thanks to Steve for pointing me to my database rather than to my backup; I retrieved it right after receiving his reply!

I have also purchased two lists, which I have yet to download.

Hopefully I have done things right and will soon be up and running. If I've neglected anything or done something wrong, I guess we will both know soon enough! The old database should contain locations, trips, users, and of course plenty of sightings!

Hi,

I have not received an upload from you yet. Are you using MS Internet Explorer? You have to wait until you get a completion message. Are you using the Support >> File Upload page on this site?

No need to download and import your two new tax lists. I will import them for you once I get your database and convert it. Then return the updated database to you. Then you will complete the instructions from Product Info >> Upgrading from 2.x or 3.0.

Jeff

Jeff,

I've tried to upload my zip file again. Hopefully, this time you'll get it. I have a couple of questions about your upload page:
1) It says my upload won't 'appear' until you authorize it. Appear where?
2) What do 'title' and 'category' mean? Isn't the title 'bird.dat.zip?'
3)Why would other members be interested in viewing my data? (You say I agree to this by doing the upload)

For now, ciao. If you don't get it, I guess I don't 'get it' either!

1) Disregard that. That only applies if others can see it, which they cannot.

2) Just type anything. It doesn't matter.

3) Noone else but myself can see it.

This is a standard upload module that I have no control over.

You should browse to your file, select it, then click Upload.

Are you on a dial-up or other?

Jeff

Jeff,

Thanks for your replies. I have now tried twice to upload the zip file to you; if you still don't have it I guess I need some help with the upload module.

Hi,

I just tested it.

Once on the Upload page: Use the Browse button to locate your zip file on your local computer and select it. Then click the Upload button on that page and wait until you get a confirmation message saying it has been uploaded.

Some questions for you:

  1. What browser are you using? (e.g. MS IE, FireFox, Chrome, etc)
  2. What type of internet connection do you have? (e.g. dial-up, cable, dsl, etc)
  3. Are you waiting for the confirmation message?

Jeff

Hi Jeff -

It's 12 noon. I uploaded my zip file 10 minutes ago. I didn't get any confirmation message yet, but the 'upload' program returned me to the support page. How long does one normally need to wait for the confirmation message?

I assume it was complete, since my upload program terminated itself. I HOPE YOU GOT IT!

I am using yahoo as my home page; my connection is via cable to a dsl line.

Jeff,

I believe everything is up and running - thanks for your help!! I was able to download the database, install it and activate the advanced license as instructed; I activated the two databases while running Birders Diary. What a relief to not lose years of data!!!
