Hello Kirk,
The answer is Yes. To both questions.
You need to have an Advanced User license - which you do.
I have two videos in the Online Help on this site - Support >> Online Users Guide - that show how to do each. Select Video Tutorials on the left table of contents, then you will see one video on how to "add a new thing to a tax list" and one on "adding a thing to a location".
The one piece of information that is not in the first video is how to determine the correct thing to add to the taxonomic list. So I will explain that briefly here. In your case, you want to add the Solitary Snipe to the AOU tax list. Use the Rosetta Stone feature to determine the name of the thing that is associated with the Solitary Snipe in the BD database. Often, this is the same name -but sometimes it is different. So...
- Bring up the Rosetta Stone window (Toolbar | Advanced | Rosetta Stone)
- Type "Solitary Snipe" into the common name field.
- Click the "Lookup" button. This will load the 3 grids below.
- In the bottom grid, you will see that the Thing Description column is "Solitary Snipe" for this bird. So that is the name you want to use in the Tax Editor in video one above.
Let me know if you have any questions.
