Hi Raymond,

Change all of your Herring Gull sightings to Larus argentatus smithsonianus. You must have entered your 'herring gull' sightings using Clements instead of ABA. If you had entered them using the ABA, then they would show up when using either tax lists. The ABA's herring gull is attached to Clements L. a. smithsonianus, the likely gull in North America.

How to do this:

  1. pull up all of your herring gull sightings using Clements in the Setup window.
  2. On the View/Edit Sightings window, select all of the sightings by using the Select All button.
  3. Click the Edit button.
  4. In the Edit window
    1. Select the Name Checkbox to the left of the name field
    2. Enter "larus agentatus smithsonianus" into the Name field
    3. Click update

You have now changed all of your sightings to the NA subspecies of Herring Gull, and when using the ABA tax list as your basis, it will show up as the species herring gull; but when using Clements, your sightings will show up as the subspecies - a bit more specific.

Jeff,

THANK YOU! My lists now agree with each other. When I made all of the Herring Gull entries it was using BD version 2.0 or 2.5, a long time ago. I didn't choose any list to enter them against, since I didn't know at the time that I could (or should) do that. In the future I'll be on the loookout for such things; as they say, forewarned is forearmed.

Babbler-

If it's any consolation, the discrepancy between the AOU/ABA and Clements' treatment of Herring Gulls has been giving users headaches for a good while. You aren't the first to get stuck over this, particularly with old data, and (unfortunately for Jeff, who has the patience of a saint sometimes), I'm sure you are far from the last.
