Jeff,

Like the posting I copied below below, I am encountering the "Run time error 339" message. I do not know what has changed on my computer since the last time I opened Birder's Diary.  I have read a couple different postings about the 339 error and your solutions but I am not clear which I should try first.  Please advise.  Please provide "simple instructions".

I have a second issue which I have been ignoring but should mention here.  I am unable to open any backup I have made because it asks for a password and I do not think I set a password.  Any suggestions for that?

Thank you.

Jeanette

Jeff,

I ran a program on my computer that modified the registry. Now I get the following RTE when I run BD - "Run time error 339 component 'mscomstl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered; a file is missing or invalid."

Any suggestions? I will try and find the latest restore point and see if that works. I will let you know.

Roland

Hi Roland,

Never, ever, Never run any program that professes to "clean the registry". Your problems will run far and deep.

Now with that warning that I have given for years out of the way, the solution to your problem shuld be as simple as re-running the installation from the Downloads page on this site. It will not overwrite your database or any of your data. It should find that mscomctl.ocx (thanks for the screenshot - big help) is missing or not registered correctly and replace it. A reboot may be required or not.

As for problem #2, you are not supposed to be able to open the backup database files. You can only open those using BD. This is expected behavior.

Let me know please if I can assist further,

Jeff

Oops. I just realized you are not Roland - Jeanette. You just posted his post at the bottom of yours. The solution is the same.

Jeff,
I ran the installation from this website. My PC rebooted.
I looked at the desktop. My old "binocular icon" is gone but there are 2 icons. I can't attach the screen shot here but they seem to do the same thing but are named a little differently.

I have clicked on the top one twice and run through the installation wizard and rebooted. and have tried one time for the 2nd icon. The icons remain and the original icon it still not appearing. So I have no access to the program.
What do I do next?

Jeanette

Hi Jeanette,

I think I should get onto your system and have a look. Please go to the "Support >> Desktop Sharing" page on this site; read the instructions; and click on "Start Session". I should be able to fix this quickly.

Did you try to do a Windows Restore to go back before this error started occuring?

Jeff

Hi Jeanette,

Sorry I missed you yesterday. When you get this and are at your computer next, please send email to support@birdersdiary.com so we can setup a time for me to get onto your computer and get things going for you.

Til then,
