Is it possible to generate a report which gives for example a list of lifers ONLY for ecuador? I can only seem to generate a full list with lifers Highlighted. But there is no way to export and sort the list as the yellow format for the lifers is not exported, e.g as a text file the yellow colour is not there. It used to be possible by adding a checkbox in the export and then sort on the checkbox and birds seen in ecuador would have an x in the checkbox when filtered in for example excel

Thanks for any help regards Kim

Hello Kim,

Let's see if I understand the question correctly - if I do - then why not use the Life List report to produce a list of lifers for Ecuador? This will produce a list of lifers for Ecuador if you specify Ecuador as the location. You can sort the list of lifers by order seen or taxonomically, etc.

Let me know if you are wanting something other than this.

Jeff

Hi Jeff
Thanks for your quick reply. I should have worded it better I really mean lifers or world lifers never seen anywhere before. If I do as you suggested I get for example aplomado falcon I have not seen it in ecuador but I have in the US so it is not what us british birders call a lifer?
Kind regards Kim

Hello Kim,

In this case, produce a Checklist Report for Ecuador. Select World and Location Lifers to highlight. Those highlighted in the World color will be species you have never seen before anywhere. Those highlighted in the Location color will be species that you have not seen in Ecuador before, but have seen elsewhere in the World. If you don't want the latter highlighted, then uncheck that box.

This does what I think you are asking for.

Jeff

Thanks Jeff

I could do and understand all that. But back to my original question if I save this report as for an example a PDF this list with the lifers highlighted in the yellow the formatting (the yellow items) cannot be filtered out so the list shows me lifers ONLY I would see in Ecuador if I move the text into say excel? In the previous version although the lifers were not highlighted there was a x in the checkbox if you had seen the bird anywhere before and you could filter this to produce a list of what would be lifers?

Is it possible to produce a list of pure lifers ONLY for ecuador?

Thanks regards Kim

Ah! I never said I was fast.

This has come up already in these forums and the answer was 'yes' you can still do this. Now to find that topic.

Here is one thread on this topic already with a workaround.

Let me know how this works for you please.

Jeff

I will need a bit of time to fiddle with that but will give it a try.

Been thinking about this a bit.

I made a change that will go into 3.7.27 unless feedback here affects these changes. So chime in with your thoughts please.

When saving as Text, or pasting from the Copy buffer, and if lifers have been chosen to be marked (highlighting for World, Location, Annual along with World Annual being outlined), then the text output will have the following tags added to the end of the first column:

  • [w] = world lifer
  • [l] = location sighting/lifer
  • [a] = annual sighting/lifer
  • And each of these will have an asterisk (e.g. "*") inserted if also, any of them would be an annual sighting/lifer anywhere in the world - for example, first time seen this year anywhere. For example, if this bird would be a location-lifer and also first time seen this year anywhere, it would have "[l*]" added at the end of the first column.

So, for example, a checklist report might look like the first screen shot below and a sightings report might look like the second.

This would allow you to import text formatted reports into excel and filter based on lifer designation.

Let me know what you think,

Jeff

It is ready any time Kim. But, let's please wait a few days to allow folks to give some feedback on this that might change the final result. If no feedback, say, by next Monday; I can release the new functionality.

Thanks

Jeff

I also think it will be a help for those few times a user want's to do something that isn't addressed in the current setup. This will add flexibility.

If I understand, this won't change appearance of current reports, just adds info to text / copy files when saving?

That is correct Kim.

FYI: v3.7.30 is now available. It has this new feature in it.

It is free. You can quickly initiate the upgrade by choosing "Help | Internet: Check for an Update" from within your current version of BD v3.7.

Hi Jeff

I have looked through this thread and I am not sure if the issue of producing a list of target lifers was resolved. I would like to produce a list of target birds only for different locations. I know I can produce a country list with my lifers highlighted in yellow but this means I need to print the entire country list which I would prefer not to do in some cases.

many thanks
Nicky

Hi Nicky
It is possible but not within birders diary. This is how I do it.
1. Produce your country list with your lifers highlighted save as a text file.
2. Import into excel, then filter the list by text = ends with [W]
3. This will produce a list of world lifers only for that country.
Kind regards Kim
