Having just returned from Birding in Kuwait, and trying to enter sightings into the sightings entry section of BD, I noticed the following species missing from the sightings entry that are on the Kuwait checklist under BD:

Northern Shoveler; Pygmy Cormorant; Eurasian Black Vulture; Eurasian Griffon Vulture; Egyptian Vulture; Western Marsh Harrier; Northern Harrier; Pallid Harrier; Montagu's Harrier; Long-legged Buzzard; Greater Spotted Eagle; Steppe Eagle; Macqueen's Bustard; Water Rail; Spotted Crake (Porzana porzana); Corn Crake; Whimbrel; Slender-billed Gull; Caspian Gull; Gull-billed Tern; Spotted Sandgrouse; Lesser Grey Shrike; Red-rumped Swallow; Red-vented Bulbul; Blackcap; Eastern Orphean Warbler; Common (Afghan) Babbler (Turdoides caudata huttoni); Siberian Stonechat; Pied Wheatear; Bank Myna; Water Pipit; and Hypocolius.

Also missing from the sighting entry is the "heuglini" sub-species of Lesser Black-backed Gull.

Missing from the Checklist and Sightings Entry is Radde's Accentor, although my recent sighting of Radde's Accentor in Kuwait will only be the 3rd historical record, if accepted - see following link http://www.birdsofkuwait.com.blog/

Thanks,

Todd Pepper

Hi Todd,

Thanks for the info. That must have been a great trip.

I am confused however by your statement: "...species missing from the sightings entry that are on the Kuwait checklist under BD".

Are you saying that the above species show up in the Checklist Editor in BD on your computer, but do not show up under sightings entry? If that is the case, then we need to look at your settings for Sightings Entry Setup. Perhaps you did not mean that as my database does not show the first three species in your list as being associated with Kuwait; using Clements 6.6.

To quickly update your list for Kuwait - or any other location in the World - please see this tutorial here. It takes a few minutes to read the topic - but the actual job of updating your Kuwait checklist data (for example) only takes a minute. And you could use the data from the site you note above. BTW - www.birdsofkuwait.com.blog did not work; but www.birdsofkuwait.com does work. I just updated the Kuwait checklist in under a minute using this site as a reference! New feature in v3.7.

Hi Jeff: It was a great trip. Two new families for me in the Crab Plover and Hypocolius, and 52 life birds in all.

Your interpretation of what I was saying is correct. I printed off a checklist for Kuwait from BD to take with me on the trip, and then when I went to enter my sightings today the listed species above that were on the checklist were not under sightings entry for Kuwait. I personally saw 12 Northern Shoveler in with a flock of about 50 Garganey at the SAA Nature Reserve in western Kuwait, and the Kuwait Ornithology Society indicates the species as an "uncommon passage migrant" and an "uncommon winter resident" with a record daily high count of 160 birds on 2 days in 1992. I had Eurasian Black Vulture at Quasr Farm and the KOS lists it as a "rare disperser in autum, winter and spring".

You can probably leave Pygmy Cormorant off the sightings list. I did not see it, and the KOS notes only 1 record on March 10, 2001.

Sorry the link to the blog did not work. It had a picture of the Radde's Accentor I found on April 6, 2010, and the KOS noted that it would be the 3rd record for Kuwait if accepted by their rare bird committee. Two of the 3 members of the committee saw the bird after I found it, so I am pretty sure the record will be accepted.

Thanks for the note on updating the Kuwait checklist. I am sure that would have been much easier than opening new sighting entry, i.e. Western Paleartic, to enter those species that were not on the original Kuwait checklist. I will keep that in mind.

Something is different in that case between the settings you used for your Checklist printout and the settings you are using for Checklist Sightings Entry. Because they both use the same data.

Try displaying a checklist report again for Kuwait on your system. If Northern Shoveler shows up in that report, then it has to show up on your Checklist Entry window as well. If it shows up on one and not the other, then check your settings (e.g. tax list, location, etc) - one of these is not the same and is the cause of the difference.

Let me know please.

p.s. Pygmy Cormorant was listed on your site in Category A - so I added it.

Take care,

Jeff

You are right, as usual, Jeff. I added Northern Shoveler to the checklist in Excel after copying the Kuwait checklist over from BD.
