Version 3.6 is already paying off in big ways. The Birder's Diary user community has pitched in and updated checklist data for all of the United States and Canada - well over a thousand updates to state and province locations.

In addition, many users have contributed to updated checklist data for countries around the world. This update contains thousands of new records.

All of these new updates are available free to licensed users of Birder's Diary version 3.6 or greater. This checklist data will not import correctly for versions before 3.6.

Why is this new checklist data important?

Data for which birds show up in which locations is constantly changing and improving. With the ever increasing number of birders out in the field, new species are being found at locations previously considered out-of-range. This new data updates your location information for all birds in Diary. Your checklist printouts will now be > 99% accurate. Your counts will now correctly reflect known location data. Your preparation for trips and field outings will be more complete and accurate!

These checklist downloads are available from the Downloads page on this site. There are three new download files under the Checklist Data section on that page.

  • Birds - ABA/Canada - 2006-Oct (5,659 records)
  • Birds - ABA/USA - 2006-Oct (22,075 records)
  • Birds - Clements/World - 2006-Oct (604,957 records)

How to Import

For the ABA/USA and ABA/Canada checklist import files

  • Select the latest ABA tax list in your database from the Taxonomy dropdown
  • Select the Overwrite Locations radio button
  • Click the Import checklist created by Diary Export button

For the Clements/World checklist import file

  • Select the latest Clements tax list in your database from the Taxonomy dropdown
  • Select the Overwrite Locations radio button
  • Click the Import checklist created by Diary Export button

Congratulations and thanks to the Birder's Diary User Community that assisted in compiling this data! You too can share and assist with the new features in v3.6. Start today in your region/country of proficiency! Edit the list for your region/country, export that and post it to the Checklist forum at www.BirdersDiary.com.

I just looked at the file Birds-United States-2006-Oct-Checklist.csv. A cursory inspection shows both Oriental Cuckoo and Mugimaki Flycatcher missing. They should both appear under theAlaska entry but they don't. After importing this file, my AOU checklist (which I updated myself form the 2004 version) which had contained 2041 species, now contains 2039.

Hi Jeff--

I made 2 attempts this afternoon to import the new Clements World Checklist upgrade.  In both cases, BD froze during the "data analysis" stage, forcing me to close the program.  No damage appears to have been done, but I don't know what if anything got installed.

I imported the 2 new ABA checklist updates (& the Amphibian checklist) without any trouble.

I thought my program froze also when nothing happened after 10 minutes, but I went to dinner and when I came back an hour later it was loaded. It is a large file and maybe you need patience before aborting. By the way, it took 1 hour for the Clements list to import on my computer.

Regards, Al Borodayko

PS: That's one hour to import and an additional 1 hour dinner to analize.

Al,
Did you get the "Not Responding" message during the analysis?

The Canada checklist erroneously tries to remove the following things that should be on their respective lists:

Cordilleran Flycatcher - Alberta
Brewer's Sparrow - Ontario
McCown's Longspur - Ontario
Neotropical Cormorant - Ontario
Northern Three-toed Woodpecker - Ontario
Tundra Goose - Ontario
White-collared Swift - Ontario

So if you import the new checklist, make sure you analyze the import and don't allow these records to be erased.

Concerning the Canada corrections from my previous post, these apply to the changes the new checklist tried to make to my current checklists. If you had not already imported all of the checklists from Pete Thayer state by state and province by province, then a lot more changes will take place.

These are changes that the US checklist tried to make to my checklists that are erroneous (I believe):

Records to be added:
Dusky Grouse - Alaska
Blue Grouse - to multiple states (it should be Sooty Grouse and Dusky Grouse now, and Blue Grouse should not be on any checklists, I think)
Sandwich Tern - Pennsylvania

Records to be deleted:
Mugimaki Flycatcher - AK
Oriental Cuckoo - AK
Red-breasted Flycatcher - AK
Thayer's Gull - AK
Passenger Pigeon - DE
Passenger Pigeon - ID
Harris's Hawk - KS
Harris's Sparrow - KS
Ross's Goose - KS
Red-throated Loon - LA
Passenger Pigeon - MT
Fea's Petrel - NC (the ABA lists it as Fea's/Zino's...NC lists it as Fea's)
Ash-throated Flycatcher - PA

Again, these are changes the new checklist imports tried to make to my current ABA checklists. As near as I can tell, all of the ones listed above are errors. You should analyze the import and check the box next to these records to keep them from being changed. I apologize if I made any mistakes in my analysis.

John,

I did not get a non-responding message or it would not have finished analizing.

All:

Thanks for being the first.

Yes - the Clements/World takes a long time to analyze. Yes, you will get the Not Responding temporary message. Let it run.

This data was compiled from State/Province Bird Records Committees among many other sources. If you believe that one or more records are in error, please state your source (with a reference) for verification of your claim. For the record, we only want to include birds that are listed for the area per the ABA tax list and the authority for that region.

Concerning Blue Grouse. It should remain as per previous records. Blue Grouse is simply a super-species now and is included in the ABA2006 tax list for BD. This super-species does still exist at all previous locations.

Let me know if I have missed anything.

Jeff

Both Oriental Cuckoo and Mugimaki Flycatcher are on the Alaska checklist (but they do not appear as far as I could ascertain) in the Birds-United States-2006-Oct-Checklist.csv file available for download. Source: http://www.uaf.edu/museum/bird/products/checklist.pdf

As for the erros/ommisions in the checklists, I had a difference in the BDv3.6.29 AOU checklist and the AOU checklist so I went in search of the differences. Here are my findings.

AOU Checklist 7th Edition thru 47th Supplement - 2041

BDv3.6.29 AOU Tax List Total - 2041/ 2042 (lower right corner of screen) The reason for the 2042 is because of the Blue Grouse. 2041 is without the Blue Grouse. So the tax lists agree.

BDv3.6.29 AOU Checklist Total - 2039

Searching through the locations I found that the Mugimaki Flycatcher and the Taiga Flycatcher have confirmed records by AOU in Alaska.

(Ref: Mugimaki Flycatcher - AOU 41st Supplement added with Alaska (Shemya Island) as the location)

(Ref: Taiga Flycatcher - AOU 47th Supplement replaced all Red-breasted Flycatcher records with Taiga Flycatcher records for Alaska (Attu, Shemya, St Lawrence Islands) as the location)
___________________________________________________________________________________
To fix checklist

In Checklist Editor for:

Taiga Flycatcher - add "Alaska" to the list of locations
Mugimaki Flycatcher - add "Alaska" to the list of locations

Because Red-breasted Flycatcher is no longer recognized as a record in Alaska remove "Alaska" from the list of locations.

___________________________________________________________________________________

The ABA Tax list is 938 /939 and the checklist is 934

The two flycatchers will change the checklist to 936. I will try to find the other two missing entries but it's obvious that it is due to a missing location.

Jeff et al.,

Sorry for not posting sources before.  Here are my sources/interpretations for the Canada corrections I mentioned before.

Cordilleran Flycatcher - Alberta
http://www.royalalbertamuseum.ca/natural/birds/birdlist/taxon.htm
They list "Western" Flycatcher.  This is because the intergrade zone between Cordilleran and Pacific-slope Flycatchers is in Alberta, and it is often not safe to differentiate between the two.  Good info is here: http://www.royalalbertamuseum.ca/vpub/wefl/intro.htm
Basically, because it is an intermediate zone, it's almost impossible to know if the Alberta birds represent Pac-slope or Cordilleran Flycatchers at this point in time.  If "Western" Flycatcher is on the Alberta list, then I think BD should either list both species in the complex or somehow list the superspecies.

For all the Ontario changes - http://www.ofo.ca/obrc/chcklst.htm

Thanks Al/Nick.

Since Pete put forth the initial Alaska checklist, I want to hear his comments also.

If you are searching the import file for Oriental Cuckoo, you won't find it. The import file contains BD internal thing names. The Oriental Cuckoo's internal name is Horsfield's Cuckoo. You will find that attached to Alaska. You should use the Checklist Editor to verify data instead of searching the import file. The Mugimaki Flycatcher is not associated with Alaska.

Jeff et al.,

Here are my sources for the US changes I mentioned.

Errors in records to be added:
Dusky Grouse - Alaska
See my post in the Blue Grouse split thread.  Sooty Grouse occurs in AK, not Dusky Grouse.

Blue Grouse - to multiple states
I'm not sure I understand the superspecies set-up in BD.  I didn't download the ABA2006 list from the site; I updated my old file with the changes instead.  So I'm not sure how you have it set up.  I have Blue Grouse as a thing still, of course, but I don't have it linked to any locations any more.

Sandwich Tern - Pennsylvania
http://www.pabirds.org/PORC_Official_List.htm

Errors in records to be deleted:
Mugimaki Flycatcher - AK
Thayer's Gull - AK
www.uaf.edu/museum/bird/products/checklist.pdf
Thayer's is listed under Iceland Gull as a subspecies.

Oriental Cuckoo - AK
Red-breasted Flycatcher - AK

I apologize; these were my mistakes b/c I didn't look in Rosetta first.  Of course, BD already has these connected to AK correctly as Horsfield's Cuckoo and Taiga Flycatcher.  The things Oriental Cuckoo and Red-breasted Flycatcher should be removed from AK.  Sorry.

Passenger Pigeon - DE
Passenger Pigeon - ID
Passenger Pigeon - MT
I can see blurbs from BNA in google searches, and both of these states are listed for the Passenger Pigeon account.  I think it says it was accidental in ID.  DE and MT should have been within its historical breeding range, I think.

Harris's Hawk - KS
Harris's Sparrow - KS
Ross's Goose - KS

http://www.ksbirds.org/kos/koslist10.pdf

Red-throated Loon - LA
My mistake.  I misread a checklist from the committee.  They have an accepted sight record, but it's not on the official checklist.  I can't believe they don't have any good records!

Fea's Petrel - NC
I assume this is trying to be removed b/c it's listed as Fea's/Zino's on the official ABA checklist.  NC lists it as a Fea's, though: http://www.carolinabirdclub.org/brc/checklist_of_North_Carolina_birds.html

Ash-throated Flycatcher - PA
http://www.pabirds.org/PORC_Official_List.htm

Let me know if I missed something.  Sorry for my errors.  Thanks again for making BD so awesome that we can all share this kind of info!

Jeff,

The comments in this post seem to me to be correct. I agree with Nick's findings and with Al's findings as well.

I found a few errors in my original posts from last Saturday when I was updating the checklists in Guide to Birds of North America today. Kansas and Ontario have 4-5 species I deleted that should not have been deleted. There were others as well and folks seem to be discovering and correcting them. I will finish this task tomorrow and will post corrections for errors that I think are obviously wrong that I introduced last week.

Some of the state checklists apparently did not include extinct species like Passenger Pigeon.

Yellow-chevroned Parakeet and Caribbean Elaenia were in past Florida checklists, but I do not see them there now.

Are you going to make these corrections and post an updated US and Canada checklist for us to download? How often will you do this?

Pete
