Hi! Jeff,

I have tried to backup my database to a CD twice now with the same results.

While the window says "10 Seconds left" to download, it actually takes many minutes. I am unable to remove the CD from the drive even though it shows the data is there. I have had to shut the system down completely in order to remove the CD and exit the BD program. I get a message that the computer is busy copying data. When I used the 3.0 version which allowed a choice for backup location, the data was transferred within seconds.

Second, when I tried to open the database from the CD it asked me for a password. I tried the password for BD but it didn't work. Would I be able to use this CD to restore data if my system should crash?

Thanks,

Jean

PS Thanks for your support via phone. I am working on updating sightings by time/date stamp so they will be in correct order. Time consuming, yes, but will be glad to have it correct. I am going to enter all new sightings by keyboard entry so life count will be correct from now on.

Hello Jean,

I don't know what window is giving you a "10 seconds left" message, but I doubt that it is BD.

You must use BD to backup your database and put it on a "local hard drive" only.

Then use whatever means you have to move that backup file to your CDrom. Typically this involves using third party software such as Roxio, etc.

I assume, that when you say you "try to open the database from the CD" you are double-clicking on that file on the CD. That of course will not work. You must move that file from the CD to your local hard disk (you can use Windows Explorer for this) and then use the RESTORE function in BD, to restore that file over top of your existing file.

Let me know if I can assist further.

Hi! Jeff,

I drag the BD backup file to my F drive as you demonstrated when we were on the phone: Go to C:\Program Files\Birder's Diary\data then drag database_bc.mdb to the CD which is in my F drive. Did I not understand (which not being computer savvy is a definite possiblility)??

I do back it up to my C drive when entering a lot of data.

Thanks,
Jean

Hi Jean,

So, the problem is not in creating the BD backup, but

  • in getting it onto your CDrom drive, and
  • that the copy time seems to take a long time, and
  • that you cannot remove your CDrom from the drive.

Does that about sum it up?

I assume that the file eventually gets to your CDrom. You should not try to open that file by clicking on it. Only use it as the target of a Restore operation in BD.

If you cannot remove your CDrom from the drive, then you should contact your vendor support (e.g. DELL, etc.) concerning that. But other than that, everything sounds basically ok.

But, don't hesitate to let me know if I can assist further.

Jeff
