I know this is an old problem, since a Google search turned up http://www.jonestc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=408.  I am in the same boat as "Vireo."  I finally broke down and ordered the v3.6 upgrade. When I installed it, I ended up with Error 48 as shown in the attachment.  Having found the thread above, I extracted the license files into System32, but the problem persists.  Unfortunately, the previous thread stops at "let me see your computer for myself," so I'm hoping you can point me to what actually fixed the problem.

Hi,

And thanks for upgrading!

This problem is almost always due to firewall/antivirus programs preventing proper installation of all system files/libraries. The problem is fixed by

1. turning off all firewall/antivirus software, and
2. re-running the installation.

Are you running Vista or a 64-bit machine? (then the solution may be different)

Let me know please.

Jeff

Jeff,

I'm sorry, but I have to report abject failure on getting this install done.  I disabled both hardware and software firewalls.  I totally disabled all the McAfee and Windows Defender software by blocking the load at start up.  I also removed the previous installation of 3.5.  By the way, somewhere along the line I ended up with a 3.6 as well.  I assume this was because I had also tried downloading the zipped version and it has a different number, but I report it for completeness.

I may have missed something, but I'm an electrical engineer with 30 years of experience with computers going back to punched cards and PDP-11's, so I'm generally able to cope.

You had asked about OS.  I'm running XP Media Edition SP2 on a one year old Dell E1505.  I have quite a bit of software loaded on the machine, but nothing that jumps out as a candidate for interference.  I just realized I could dump all the running processes from Microsoft Process Explorer, so I've attached a dump of what is running now after an evening of web browsing.  I will try to redo the download with things turned off and do a dump under the stripped-down conditions, but I may not get to it for a couple of days due to work overflowing into my spare time.

I hope you can shed some light on this.  Thanks for your help.

Arlen

Arlen,

I have not had a problem with that dll, but I have had other dlls disappear when I install software.

Have you done a search on your machine to see if SKCA32.dll is really there?

It may be there but unregistered because some other software had a probem with it.  If so, you can simply re-register it.

If it is not found, I would Google for it on the net, download and register it, and then see what happens.

Steve

Hi Arlen:

PDP-11s eh? I cut me teeth on those. I worked for DEC for many years myself in the 80s and 90s.

Is this a new installation on this machine? Or is it an upgrade to an existing installation? You say you removed 3.5 - so I assume the latter. Does this mean that 3.5 once worked on this machine? It used the same DLL.

This file in particular is part of the Licensing software in the application. It must go in the Windows directory and be registered.

The only place I have ever seen a problem with this file is on a 64-bit machine. Is your PC 64-bit?

No need to ever remove/deinstall 3.5. Did you keep a backup of your database?

What I recommend and start with a clean reboot. Turn off all antivirus/firewall software. Install 3.6 from this web site - from the Downloads page by clicking on the Network Installation link. Report any errors or warnings back here.

You don't want to get this DLL from the web, only from my install.

Let me know,

Jeff

I had an expired demo 3.6 and finally decided to buy the licence. However, the runtime 48 error came up when I tried to unlock. I have tried to re-install twice without luck. And the file is there! Under system32. I'm running Vista, but the demo version worked there. It's just the unlock that don't work. Any suggestion?

Hello Lars:

A couple things:

1) just re-run the installation from an admin account so that it has the privilege to install this DLL
2) be sure to start BD by right-clicking on the desktop icon and choosing "Run as administrator.." each and every time you use BD.

Please let us know,
Jeff
