Hello all,
Here's a working checklist of all CA subspecies using the ABA subspecies tax list. The checklist was exported by location CALIFORNIA without contained locations included. All of these state checklists are likely to contain a few omissions/errors, particulary concerning vagrant subspecies, b/c I do not have the best resources that cover such vagrants.

Thanks Nick. Looks good.
It added 3 new things to the CA location. I ignored an Alder/Willow hybrid thing you have obviously created on your database.
Thanks, Jeff |

Jeff,
Right, that was something I made for myself. I'm betting the new things are Ross's Gull and Taiga Flycatcher?

Hi guys!
When I did a test import, BD wanted to add 5 species (minus the hybrid which I had removed earlier), and wanted to delete 379 species (please see attached).
Importing the records I chose "ABA with subspecies" and "Overwrite Locations".
BTW Nick, thank you very much for all the work you've done. Your work has encouraged me to delve deeper into BD and attempt to create checklists for some of the local places I bird.

Hi Rob,
Any removal that's not a subspecies is possibly an error, but all subspecies removals should be correct. Your screen shot shows Abert's Towhee (no subspecies) is being removed, which shouldn't be happening. My checklist has Abert's Towhee (no subspecies) and Abert's Towhee aberti. Dunno what the deal is there. Those additions are all correct.
Glad to be of service! I love this kind of stuff.

Nick & Rob,
The screen capture Rob shows probably just truncated the subspecies designation. It will not show partial words.

I don't think that is it. I used "Write to log" and below are the first few lines:
--------------RECORDS TO REMOVE---------------
REMOVE: (Abert's Towhee) (CALIFORNIA) (True) (8963)
REMOVE: (Abert's Towhee vorhiesi) (CALIFORNIA) (False) (40924)
REMOVE: (Acorn Woodpecker formicivorus) (CALIFORNIA) (False) (27288)
Thanks!

That is interesting Rob. The only thing I can think of is that you did not select "Overwrite Location" on the import. You should be specifying "overwrite location" and the "ABA Subspecies tax list" on import. Are you using Clements instead?
I just re-did the import and still have abert's towhee and the appropriate subspecies of that as well.

Hi Jeff!
Yep, using "Birds - ABA - NA - 2006 - wSubspecies" and have "Overwrite Locations" chosen.

Very interesting. I assume you are running 3.6.49?
Do this please Rob:
- Open the Checklist Editor and populate it as shown below - tell me if you have the two Abert's Towhees as shown below.
- Then, rerun the import of this CA checklist and again show me the Analysis window.
Thanks much,
Jeff |

Hi Jeff:
Yep on the 3.6.49.
1. Because I cancelled the import I actually have three listed (please see attached).
2. Attached is the Analysis Window. (please see attached).
Thanks,

Aha! Rob - you are not simply downloading the attached csv file. You are somehow deleting the first row in the CSV file. The first row is a mandatory blank row. Since that is being removed, then "Abert's Towhee" becomes the first row - which is ignored by design. So, since the import doesn't find "Abert's Towhee" in the import file, it thinks it doesn't belong in California.
What are you doing to this import file? My bet, is that you are opening in Excel (bad move) and then saving.
The solution is to simply download straight to your disk WITHOUT opening it first. Or, you can edit the file you already have using NotePad and add a blank line at the top.
Let us know please. Jeff |

Damn! Guilty as charged!
I had opened the file to remove the Alder/Willow Flycatcher hybrid and didn't realize Excel was saving the file sans the blank line.
So, I added back the blank line, and the checklist imported perfectly.
Thanks!

Thanks Rob.
fyi - you don't have to remove the alder/willow flycatcher. The import will ask you about it and you can simply choose Ignore. In which case that record will be ignored and not imported.
