I am currently running Windows XP, Media Center. I prefer to use a limited account for most activity. I downloaded BD using an administrator account, but cannot access it from a limited account. If I try I get a message that BD is either open by another user or that permission is needed to access the program. Unlike some programs that ask upon download whether the program is to be shared among users, I don't recall the BD download asks. Is there any way to set BD or XP to allow limited accounts access (without having to resort to launching it with "Run as".

Thanks,

Scott

I suspect the problem is that BD puts the database in C:\Program Files\Birder's Diary\data by default. Access to C:\Program Files is restricted.

A feature was recently added to BD that allows specifying the location of the database when the program is opened. I found a pointer to a message in the old forum that documents the procedure here:

What you could try is to move the database file to a folder you can access, something under My Documents for example. Then use that feature to modify the shortcut to open the database in that location.

HI Scott:

Roy's idea sounds like a nice thing to try. Let us know if this works.

However, I did not know that XP Media Center had a "Run as admin..." or ever required it.  Does it?

You are right that BD does not ask about installation for all users. I have never seen any such issue on thousands of installations on XP (but I am a bit inexeunder-experienced with Media Center version).

My solution would be to install BD from the account you intend to use it from. That seems simple and straightforward - and it should work without any issues.

Let us know please,

Jeff
