09/05/2008 10:20 AM Alert

I purchased the Clements 2008 world taxonomic list on August 31 and still haven't been able to play with my new toy .  I have Windows XP, and after downloading the Clement's World Checklist  from the website, I extracted the zip file  using the Windows Extract Wizard according to the instructions provided.  I did not attempt to open it.  It's sitting on my desktop as an MS Office Excel CSV file (24.854 KB).  My attempts to import it into birder's diary were unsuccessful and I gave up after attempting for 1 1/2 hours.

I don't want to open it as it appears to be in excel format.  For $99 I thought I was purchasing a software with fotos and recordings of birds in addition to the taxonomic checklist I could import into and use with Birder's Diary (which I'm trying out and still deciding whether or not to purhase). Am I missing something? Will they be shipping me a disk with pic/sounds or is the checklist alone $99?

My computer has no program for extracting zip files other than what is embedded in Windows XP.  I tried to get a free version of  Winzip but every site wanted my credit card...it seems this is no longer available for free though once upon a time I remember having a free evaluation copy.

Does anyone know if I can re-download the checklist since the 1st attempts have been fruitless?  Any suggestions?  I have very limited time (single mom) and am thoroughly frustrated with my experience thus far.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!!!

Jennifer

Hello Jennifer,

You must let the import run until completion. The import of the Clements checklist data file can take 2-3 hours. And it sits there and looks like it is doing nothing for about 30 minutes to an hour. But let it run until finished as per the instructions on the Tax List Instructions page on this site. Be sure to follow these instructions step-by-step. There are two files to download and import.

Do NOT open the CSV file with Excel or anything else except BD - or it will corrupt the CSV file.

You do not need WinZip if you have XP - just use the Extract All feature in Windows Explorer.

You ask about redownloading the checklist. No need to re-download, just extract the CSV from the ZIP download (2 different files)  as per the instructions, and let the import run to completion.

Nothing about Birder's Diary contains photos nor sounds. That is another product sold by www.thayerbirding.com.

Let me know if I can assist further.

Jeff
