I am using BD 3.5 I was adding sightings to the Oregon list using the Add > Checklist Entry > Location: Oregon > Speech rec: Yes > Sort: Tax > Style: checklist > Taxonomy: Clements 2004. There is no Whimbrel (a fairly common bird in OR) on the list. The only Numenius species are the Bristle-thighed and Long-billed Curlew. So I went to the Find box and entered the following. Beside my entry I show the response in the Find field -- caps are as shown. W Wandering Tatler Wh Wheatear Whi WHIB Whim WHIM Then an error alert pops up stating: Fatal Error Cannot find Thing in Checlist by Thing ID! Latest Error Properties: 0= Program stops. I tried to get around using "Whimbrel" and typed in N Nashville Warbler Nu Nucifraga columbiana Num Numenius americanus Numenius p Numenius phaeopus hudsonicus Fatal Error Same message as before I tried it with the Keyboard entry method and that worked fine. I tried to enter Whimbrel via the Tax Edit. It was difficult because the program did not want to take the information and kept wanting to call the common name Whimbrel hudsonicus. I did manage to enter it as Whimbrel, Numenius phaeopus hudsonicus, but it still does not appear in the Oregon checklist. Now whether I type in Whimbrel or the scientific name, the result is the same: Fatal Error. I have noticed when trying to enter Whimbrel when the Checklist entry is filtered for other states or countries, that Whimbrel does not appear on the list. Perhaps this issue has been addressed previously or is fixed in the new version of BD.

Hi DB: Thanks much for all the details. It allows me to diagnose the problem without too many back-n-forth posts. I will bet that you are not running the latest build of version 3.5 - which is v3.5.56. You can check this with Help \| About. This Find error in the Checklist Entry screen was fixed by build 56. This is a free update and you can upgrade to it at anytime with your 3.5 license from the bottom of the Downloads page. However, when you tried to fix this by using the Tax Editor, you went about this the wrong way. You should be using the Checklist Editor to add a thing to a Location. Let me know if I can assist further. Jeff

Well, I just installed the newest version of BD and tried again. This time Whimbrel is still not on the list for Oregon, which it should be. So I typed in the find box just as before. When I typed the sequence to "Whi" I got got "WHIB" but the text in the Find box would not go beyond. It stopped at WHIB: White Ibis and the little bell rang. BUT the program did not crash--Improvement. I then tried typing in the scientific name and got Numenius phaeopus hudsonicus but the list pointed to Long-billed Curlew, which is not Whimbrel. I intend to now install the new Clements, perhaps that will help DB

Hi DB, Glad you got up to the latest v3.5. But, installing the latest Clements will not fix this issue. You simply need to add this bird to the Oregon list. I am showing Whimbrel on my Oregon list. Have you imported the "World-Birds-Checklist" from the Downloads page? If you have, then it should be on your Oregon list. Try that first. It takes about an hour to import. See screen capture below of Checklist Editor. I am checking out for the evening. Back in the morning. Jeff

I checked for Whimbrel as you suggested. On the 'ambiguous' box it is Hudsonian Curlew. In the Checklist Ed. it is shown as Whimbrel hudsonicus and is shown as common in Oregon, but as you can see from the background of the screen shot of the Oregon checklist, it is not there and its scientific name, typed into the Find box, points to Long-billed Curlew. Hudsonian Curlew, Whimbrel hudsonicus, or Long-billed Curlew? And how do I get it in the Oregon Checklist? --DB

DB: This issue exists when using Clem. 2004 taxonomy. You can use the ABA Tax which shows Whimbrel as a species or alter your Clem. 2004 Taxonomy as follows. 1. Open CHECKLIST screen. 2. Make sure Checklist location tab is selected. 3.Put Clem. World 2004 in TAXONOMY box. 4. Put "Oregon" in Checklist LOCATION. 5. Type "Whimbrel" in THING box. You will be given TWO choices. 6. Select EURASIAN Whimbrel and OK. This will enter the whimbrel as a full species. 7. Click ADD then UPDATE. Eurasian Whimbrel = NA Whimbrel = Hudsonian Curlew = Whimbrel hudsonicus at the species level. In Clems 2004 Whimbrel is split. Al

DB, Al is spot on - of course. From the screen capture below, (Rosetta Stone feature) you can see that the ABA's Whimbrel is Clement's Whimbrel hudsonicus (a subspecies). How do we know this? Because they are both tied to the BD internal *thing* "Hudsonian Curlew". This is an internal identifier used in BD to uniquely identify birds/things irregardless of taxonomic naming. (Please read first few topics in Checklist forum for a primer on this.) One more thing that may not be obvious is, that when in the taxonomic editor 1) if you specify a taxonomic list, the Location tab will display the taxonomic-specified common names in taxonomic order, and only those things defined by the specified taxonomic list for that location; 2) if you do not specify a taxonomic list, the location tab will display the internal *thing* names in alphabetical order for all *things* tied to that location (e.g. you will get birds, butterflies, mammals, etc - for all things in your database tied to that location) Is this complicated? Yes. Try writing a program that bridges several taxonomic lists, across similar and different areas! As far as I can tell, your data is correct and the functioning is correct. When using Clements, Whimbrel hudsonicus will appear on the checklist for Oregon, because it is the *thing* in Clements list that occurs in Oregon. When using the ABA list, Whimbrel will appear. They are both tied to the same *thing* in BD. Hope this helps some. Please do read the first 5 topics in the Checklist forum if you want to learn more about *things* in BD. Jeff
