I am trying to upgrade on my new computer first from 3 to 3.0.2 then to 3.5 and then to 3.6.20.

Although I just downloading 3.6.20 by clicking on Network Installation it starts the process but then says "a newer version of this installation is on the server. Please redownload the installation.

I logged off and repeated with the same result.

Also in the directions it says to upgrade from 3.5.x advanced. I am not sure that that is the version of 3.5 I just installed. Is that important.

when do I purchase the licenses that I need?

I brought data from my old computer over to this one. It is in

c:\programfiles\birder'sdiary\data\database.mdb. Is this correct? Will the 3.6.20 program just find it or do I have to do something?

Hi Jeanne,

I assume you have found the page with the instructions for upgrading from v3.0 to 3.6.

You don't need to install 3.5. Just install 3.6 after you apply the 3.0.2 upgrade from the same page.

The message about "not having the latest version" doesn't make any sense. Exactly where/when do you get that message?

Did you get 3.6 installed completely? Does it start up?

Also in the directions it says to upgrade from 3.5.x advanced. I am not sure that that is the version of 3.5 I just installed. Is that important.
No - it just says to purchase that license.

At any point in the process.

Per the instructions, you move that over after installing 3.6. Then start 3.6. The first time you start 3.6, it will recognize that the DB is not up-to-date and it will update it.

Please re-read the instructions on this site and follow them in order. Several upgrades have been accomplished via these instructions and I believe they are accurate and proven. But, let me know if you find any problem with them or if I can further assist you.

I am also getting the message ' A newer version of this installation is available on the server'. This happens while the BDV36 program is being downloaded. I finally gave up on getting V3.6.20 from the Download page and started Birders Diary, Help > Check for an update and did the download that way. All appeared to go OK.

Now when ever I do a print preview of any type of report ( Checklist, Lifelist etc) and then close that window I get the following message ' BDV36.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created'. My only option is to cancel this window. Then Birders Diary closes. If I print the report I get the same message.

Hi Tim,

Can you please provide a screen capture of this error if my next statement doesn't fix it.

When you click on Network Installation, do you choose Run or Save? Please give me all the steps you take up to getting that "newer version.." message.

I suspect that if you chose Run it would work just fine.

The problem you mention is generally/always fixed by a complete/correct re-installation.

Turn off all firewall/antivirus software you have running on your system and repeat the installation. This fixes these problems 99% of the time. They interfere with proper installation of system files and cause these errors.

Let us know please.
Jeff

I turned off my firewall and antivirus programs. Then tried to download twice, once with RUN option  and then with SAVE option same results. Received the message while it was trying to download UDF. grd

I will try getting you a screen shot.

Thanks Tim.

Sorry for the trouble. I would like to figure this out.

In either case, you also need to fix the Report Preview error. So, go ahead and turn off all antivirus/firewall software and start the installation again from within BD as you did before. Let it run to completion before you turn your antivirus/firewall software on again. Then try the report preview and let me know.

Thanks,
Jeff

I turned off the antivirus/firewall software. Did the download from Birders Diary, appeared to go OK. I then ran a report from Special Reports, Checklist, Sightings, Trip Report, and Life List. They all terminated with the message 'BDV36.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created'.

Someplace you asked me to discribe what is confusing. I ws following directions upgrading from 3.0.x

It says to purchase 2 licenses to upgrade from v3.0 to 3.6.

The lsit of possible choices is rather long.

It is clear to purchase "Upgrade to 3.5 from licenced version of 3.0." This is my situation.

the second is not clear to me. It says "Upgrade to 3.6 from version 3.5.x-advanced.

the description on the order form also says "this is for holders of 3.5 advanced user only. As far as I know I am not a 3.5 advanced user. I selected 3.6 basic user license which you said is wrong. Now that I look at he list it seems to me I should have selected upgrade to 3.6 from v3.5.x basic. At any rate I think you could make this absolutely clear if you want to help other users who might read it the way I did.

I tried to import the fix for herring gull and received the following error:

The good news is after getting this error I no longer have a problem closing the report window. Birders Diary does not close and issue the error message.

I then rebooted my PC and the report closing problem returned.

HI Tim,

Others have reported this problem. I have someone's database right now to investigate. If I isolate this problem from their database, then I should have the fix out shortly. Stay tuned.

This problem appears to have gone away.

I downloaded a new version of my firewall (AOL Privacy Wall) today and after the install and reboot of PC I tried the the report print preview, to get a screenshot for you. Well the dog gone thing worked. The report window closed normally. So I hope AOL somehow fixed it. Thanks for your time.

Thanks for the update Tim. There was a typo in the import file. Fixed.

Thanks,
Jeff
