I have yet another BD2eBird issue. I successfully imported eBird data from yesterday into my database. At the same time, this import added a new species to the Wisconsin list. I can view/edit the sightings, but when I attempt to make a report of Dane County sightings I get no species listed. Instead the entire data window is composed of "Form [CommonName]" repeated in place of the species names. Page 1 is full of listings, but they consist of only "Form [CommonName] repeated over and over.

To further complicate the issue, now when I attempt to get a report for any location, I get the same result.

What can I do?

Hi Chuck,

This has nothing to do with the BD to eBird toolkit. This has to do with some poorly behaving piece of software on your sytem overwriting pieces of BD.

Reboot your system and see if that fixes things. Else, if not, simply re-run the 3.6 installation from the Downloads page on this site. That should fix it. It will not overwrite your data. But to be sure, create a backup first and save it in a safe location.

Let me know please,

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

I've done what you said. Now when trying to edit/view or get a report, I get run time error 3049. It looks as if the data base is now totally messed up?

Hi Chuck,

Please give me the full text of the 3049 error.

What directory did you install to? By default the latest 3.6 installs to c:\Birder's Diary. But you may have had it previously installed in C:\Program Files\Birder's Diary.

What OS are you running?

Hi Jeff,

I've got 3.6 in the c:\Birder's Diary directory, and I'm using Windows XP-Home.

Here's the text for VIEW/EDIT:

Run-time error '3049':

Cannot open database 'SELECT *, (SelectTOP 1BandCode From BandCodes where BandcodeListID=1 AND ThingID=Sightings.ThingID) As BandCode From SightingsView, Where TaxonomyID IN (20) AND [WhenSeen] >= #8/01/2009# AND [WhenSeen] <= #8/02/2009# AND ObserverID=5Order By [WhenSeen] DESC, TaxonomyID ASC, SortOrder ASC, Sightings.SightingID ASC', It may not be a database that your application recognizes, or the file may be corrupt.

When I then hit the OK button, the program crashes.

When I try to get a report, I get the following text:

Run-time error '3049':

Cannot open database 'Select *From qry ReportLifeList Where TaxonomyID=5 Order By Classifications, SortOrder ASC', It may not be a database that your application recognizes, or the file may be corrupt.

When I then hit the OK button, the program just shuts down.

Please fix.

Chuck

Chuck - this is strange. I should get onto your system and have a quick look.

I will be available tomorrow morning from 8am MDT on. Please let me know when you will be available to let me onto your system over the internet and I will send instructions.

Hi Chuck,

I don’t have anything yet. I cannot find the old report of this problem anywhere.

The key is to figuring out what happened in between when it last worked on your system and when it stopped working.

We know that if you wiped your Windows installation on that box and reinstalled Windows, and then Birder’s Diary – it would work. So what is causing your reporting software to output field names instead of the values. And coupled with that, why did you also have database corruption simultaneously with this? My suspicion is that the two are linked and that you have had some sort of corruption on your file system. Normally, I would think that in this case, a reinstallation would cure this, but… it won’t replace a file that appears to be the same as one it wants to install. So, here is a next step for you to execute.

1.       Save a copy of all of everything under C:\birder’s diary\data\... to some place else on your disk or to a memory stick.

2.       Then, deinstall Birder’s Diary from your system using the Control Panel => add/remove programs

3.       Reboot.

4.       Install Birder’s Diary again from the Downloads page at www.BirdersDiary.com.

5.       First, simply run the installation with the Demo database and see if you can add a couple sample sightings, view/edit, and report on them.

6.       If #5 works, then replace the sample database (just rename the sample so that you can keep it) with a copy of the last database we used that doesn’t have DB errors. And see if Birder’s Diary works now.

Please try this and report back. Let me know what happens at each stage and if you get an error, let me know which stage above, what you did and what happened.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

I went through the procedure as instructed with sample observer. I got into trouble on step 5. Again, can't do a report. Entering and editing work ok.

Thanks Chuck. At worst, we are back to where we were this morning.

Questions:

Did you install/upgrade any database software recently?
Did you change language/regional settings on your OS recently?

Also, let me try your database here to rule in/out database issues. Can you please ZIP your database and upload it using the Support => File Upload page on this site? I will test it on my systems.

Hi Jeff,

I've uploaded the data to you. The answer so far as I know is
"no" to your 2 questions.

Hi Chuck,

You apparently uploaded the DEMO database. It had no sightings data in it. Is this what you intended to upload? What I really wanted to test was your latest database with your sightings in it that did not produce any errors other than the reporting issue. Please upload that when you get a chance.

Also, above, I asked that you add some sightings to the Demo database and test View/Edit and Reporting. Did you add any sightings? As this database seemed to be devoid of any sightings in it. If you didn't add any sightings them I am wondering how you tested reporting. Just trying to dot my I's and cross my T's to hopefully find a resolution to this.

Let me know please. Thanks.

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Sorry, I got mixed up. And, yes, there were about 20 sightings on the demo database.

Also worth mentioning is that I recall the program needing a fair amount of unused space in the hard
drive to function properly. My hard drive space is now under 2 gig. Is that a factor?

Will send a a copy of the backup I have that worked. Should be there in about 10 minutes.

Thanks for all your patience.

Hi Chuck,

Disk space should not be an issue. Especially if you have 2GB (or did you mean 2MB?).

Hi Jeff,

I do have 2 GB and am removing enough stuff to end up with 7 GB unused space (housekeeping).

Another thing I forgot about yesterday was that as soon as the BD2eB file from eBird was put into my BD data, I edited that data so it looked like the other excel .cvs files.  This was on the original database.  That shouldn't have messed anything up, especially since the "sample" data had the same report errors.
