I am just getting started with BD2eBird and have a question to covered in the User Guide.

If I import a file from eBird into BD from a new location what happens to the location information.  In other words does the location (eBird Hotspot) get automatically added to BD during the upload or how is that handled?

Hi Mike,

Gerco knows for sure, but I believe that your "eBird Hotspot" location will get created and added as a child of $Orphaned Locations$ in the location tree. All you have to do after that import is to edit that location and propertly assign it to its rightful parent in your hierarchy.

Go ahead and import - I believe you will find this is the case.

Thanks Jeff,

I did it and it worked the way you indicated.  Seems like a lot of steps for an automatic import, but I guess this only has to be done once for each location.

It would be nice if eBird would output the state in addition to the hotspot name so this process could be automated.  Maybe the user could be asked to identify the state before creating the import file so it could be semi-automatic?  Add to the wish list for a future release.

Thanks for the update Mike. I know that Gerco is also working on a multi-file import from eBird into BD for the next release.
