I have done some very basic "checking" of the updates for 3.5 BD on both the laptop and desktop.
1) cannot access Birds, North America, Nov. 2005 or Nov. 2005a, or Clements 2005 on Desktop. (get message that they are not licensed, contact online store).
2) same as above on desktop.
3) I noticed that when I downloaded the world checklist that on laptop only 59 of 604891 records were transfered, and on desktop 465891 of 604891 were transfered.
4) I am now able to log in to website and get into the forums. When I enter the downloads section of site, I do get a display of the downloads that are available with my upgrade.
The open questions are:
1) how do I get the birds NA nov.2005 and 2005a and Clements 2005 updates authorized for me to use;
2) what is the significance of many of the checklist records not being transfered;
3) why did I not have any 2004 tax/checklist updates on my desktop after downloading the 3.5 BD update, and what action is required to correct this?

Hi Bob,
And congratulations for being the first to post in the new forums!!! You get a complimentary copy of any taxonomic list. Just contact me before you purchase at jeff@birdersdiary.com. The reason it took me so long to reply is that this first post allowed me to work out some bugs in the forums.
1 & 2) you need to activate them by entering your license ID and password for each tax list per the instructions at "Downloads > Tax List Instructions" on this web site. 3) This just indicates how many were unique and actually added to your database. Nothing to do here. 4) Do you see the download files? If not, you are not logged in. Please log in.
Open Questions 3) Open your ReadMe file (c:\program files\birders diary\$ReadMe35.rtf) and in there are instructions for importing your 2004 versions of the tax lists. This file should have been presented to you upon completion of your installation.
Thanks again! Jeff |

I hope this goes through - the previous message was rejected.
I have gone over both the laptop and desktop installations, as well as rereading the ReadMe file. Unfortunately, no progress has been made in being able to use tax/checklist updates. Much of this is repeating earlier messsages, but tried to be more complete.
DESKTOP 1) No import window was presented after downloading 3.5 BD upgrade. Currently the import window will not open (file\import). 2) The 2004 updates are not in the data file (c\program files\Birders Diary\data). Only a database file is there. The 2004 updates are not in the License information window. 3) The updates for Birds-ABA-NA 11/2005, Birds-ABA-NA 11/2005a, and Birds-Clements 2005 were downloaded, and zipped files were opened. They have not been imported because I cannot get the import window to open. 4) When trying to enter sightings data the three 2005 Tax cannot be used (get message that they |

are not licensed, and to contact sales to purchase them. The have been purchased, but I do not know how to unlock them, using the license ID and password, if they cannot be imported and show in the license information window.
LAPTOP 1) The 2004 updates were downloaded with the BD3.5 upgrade, and show in the license information window. I followed the procedure in ReadMe for importing. 2) The three updates for 2005 were downloaded and unzipped if needed. I followed that same procedure for importing as with the 2004 updates, but they do not show in the license information window. 3) I have tried several times to import the 2005 updates, but get a message that the update (i.e. Birds-Clements 2005) is already in use. Does this mean that it was successfully imported? 4) I have the license ID and password for the 2005 updates, but the only way I saw to unlock them was with the license information window, and they do not appear there. 5) As expected, when I try to enter sightings data in any of the 2005 tax. updates I get a message that it is not licensed and to contact sales to purchase it.
Questions - 1) How do I get the 2004 updates for my desktop? Can I overlay another download of 3.5? Do I have to uninstall and start over, and if so, what is the risk of data loss? Am I missing something on being able to open the import window, and/or a way to unlock the 2005 updates that were downloaded?
2) Same question for laptop relative to unlocking the three 2005 updates. How do I do this when they do not appear in the license information window, or how do I get them to show in the license window?
This is becoming very time consuming for me, and I would guess it is for the tech support group. What is the next step to make some progress on using the 2005 updates, and getting the 2004 updates on my desktop? |

The web site was experiencing big problems for the last 16 hours. Sorry about that. Your posts should be fine now.
And sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I have been trying to put those fires out.
Desktop
- The Import window is appearing, just off the main viewing area. You will notice when you select File | Import/Export that the main BD window produces scroll bars on the right and bottom. Use these to scroll the Import/Export window into view.
- You can download the files in question from the Downloads page here at this site. AOU 2004, ABA 2004 (not the NOV version), Clements 2004.
- It appears that you are working with a default 3.5 database that comes complete with the 2005 versions of most tax lists. In the ReadMe file, there are instructions for copying your 3.0 database into place. Please follow all instructions in there for upgrading from 3.0 to 3.5. The file is c:\program files\birders diary\$ReadMe35.rtf.
Also, just because those taxonomies are in your database does not imply you are licensed to use them. You can import any tax list from this site, but to use it, you must Unlock it with a valid License ID. Also, see instructions on this site for upgrading to 3.5 from 3.0 at Product Info > Upgrading from 2.5 or 3.0.
- You have to Unlock them using Help > License Info in Birder's Diary. See Downloads > Tax List Instructions on this site. When you purchased the upgraded tax lists, your invoice included License IDs and a password for each tax list.
Laptop
- Good. I see now that your laptop had v3.0 installed on it. That is why the two installations went differently. The installation on your laptop found a v3.0 installation and database. So the installation downloads the files you need to import and copies and updates your 3.0 database to 3.5 automatically for you. The installation on your Desktop did NOT find 3.0 installed with a valid database. Therefore, it did a blank 3.5 install with the latest tax lists.
- This is because you have not unlocked them yet. See instructions on this site at Downloads > Tax List Instructions. It just takes a couple seconds.
- Yes. You just need to unlock them per #2.
- They won't appear until you unlock them. Click on the Unlock Now button.
- Yes - hopefully now fully explained.
Probably more than you wanted to read!
Questions
- Answered above.
- Answered above
Important Since your 3.0 database has been upgraded to 3.5 on your laptop and should have all of your sightings, you should do all of the imports etc on that system. Then, make a backup of your database (using File | Backup/Restore) and copy the database over to your desktop and do a Restore. Now both databases will be up-to-date and in sync!
All you will have to do on your desktop is to unlock/activate your individual licenses. The license information doesn't travel with your database, but rather is specific to, and stays with your system.
Hopefully I have detailed and explained everything to make the rest of your upgrade go smoothly. But please reply back if I can help with anything else.

Getting this response entered has been a little frustrating, as I found (for the second time) that your system must automatically logout after a certain time, but there was no notification that all the data that had been prepared should be submitted before the logoff! However -- here is a shortened response.
Desktop It was not a correct assumption that the desktop did not have 3.0 installed and a database. I think I provided the information earlier -- but both computers had the same programs (latest version prior to 3.5), and both were in sync for sightings. They are also in sync after the 3.5 upgrade.
I finally realized that the unlock window does not prompt for update, and have unlocked all downloads. Now able to enter sightings.
I gather that I am to go back and download all 2004 updates for the desktop, and will do so unless I hear otherwise from you.
Thanks for information, and the freebe upgrade.

Hi Bob,
No need to import the 2004 versions if you have the 2005 versions.
Sorry about the timeout issue and other errors. Still working some of the final kinks out of this new web site.
Just so I can post this problem on the forum of the owners of this forum software, you were posting your reply and by the time you pressed submit, your logon had timed out and therefore the submit failed. Is that correct?
Thanks Jeff |

Bob asked how can one tell which Tax lists are already imported and which are licensed.
How to tell which tax lists are already imported
There are many windows which show you the list of imported tax lists. Here is one.
- Open the Tax Viewer

- Click on the Taxonmy Drop down and view the list of imported tax lists

How to tell which tax lists are licensed
Licensing a tax list is the act of unlocking it with your License ID and password from your purchase at the Online Store.
You can only tell which are licensed by using the License Information window.
- Click on Help | License Information
- The list of Licensed Features shows you want has been licensed/activated.

Thanks for last bit of info on verifying which updates have been imported and which have been unlocked/licensed.
I like the changes I am seeing as I work on entry of sightings from the last trip.

I have found that the logout period is 60 minutes after the last activity from you in your browser. This seems adequate.
But I agree, it is frustrating when you do not get any notification of lost work in progress due to this.
Alas, this is beyond my control. I just wanted to post this for information's sake. |
