Help! I have just unpdated and registered Birder's Diary (to version 3.6), but now can't even get to base one. As soon as I click on the desktop icon to open the program, I get a runtime error 3061 message; 1 parameter expected, but too few provided.

I have Windows Vista and my computer has German settings. I read some threads about date formats as a cause of this problem, but I don't even know how to change the date format on my computer, and to be honest, would prefer not to, because I write a lot of German correspondence on my computer.

Has the date problem been corrected? Could this be the cause or should I look elsewhere?

With warm regards from the rolling vineyards of southern Germany,

Ann Marie

Hello Ann Marie,

This doesn't sound like a date problem. But BD has historically had issues on foreign language systems - and the root cause of this problem may be that.

It is very easy to test and revert back to your German settings.

  1. Exit BD if running
  2. Click on your Vista start button in the lower left.
  3. Type 'region' into the text field at the bottom of the popup.
  4. You will see "Regional and Language Options" as a choice (or the German equivalent thereof)
  5. Select that.
  6. On the Formats TAB, remember the current setting in the dropdown for "Current format"
  7. Now change the format to "English (United Staes)"
  8. Click Apply
  9. Start BD and see if the problem has gone; let us know.
  10. Now change back to what you had. And click Apply

That is it and no harm done. Takes just a few seconds.

Now - with that said, I still don't think this is a language/region problem.

I believe we have talked before. Didn't BD work originally on this system after installation? You did not have this problem - right? If not, then I wonder what happened in-between when it worked and it started producing this error; Any ideas? If I am wrong, did BD then never work and always produced this error upon startup?

Let's start here please.

Jeff

From Ann Marie

Hello Jeff,

I tried what you suggested and can actually open the program now and could enter my old database. But as soon as I try any functions, such as entering a location, a sighting, or opening a report, I get the same error message again and get booted out of the program. Do I need to follow the same procedure you suggested for each of these functions?

(Yes, we corresponded before. Birder’s Diary was running only in demo mode and I had problems registering it, but that problem has since been solved.)

Thanks for your help.

Ann Marie

Hello Ann Marie,

Replying to post notifications you get via email do not come back to this forum - so you actually have to go back to this forum to continue the conversation. fyi

When you say that you tried what I suggested, does this mean that you set your language format to English. And that the startup error went away? If so, that doesn't make any sense.

But now, you get the same exact error when doing other things in BD. Again - no sense in that. So let me know if I understand what you are saying correctly.

What kind of computer are you on? What OS? (e.g. Vista, XP, etc) 32-bit or 64-bit?

And, are you saying that BD ran fine in Demo mode, but after activating your licenses you started getting this error? If so, this points to some sort of corruption issue. I recommend re-running the Network Installation from the Downloads page. It will not overwrite your data, but may fix possible file corruption issues.

If you continue to get the problem, please give me just one instance where this error occurs; tell me exactly what you do, and please post a screenshot of the error.

Let's start here.

Jeff
