Hi! Jeff,

This is an "old" new topic. After being away from my home computer most of the summer, I just began adding sightings from some recent trips. I went to the sightings report  and typed in Aliso Park-and- there are now 121 new sightings (when the sightings were in other places). I went back and reread the old threads regarding this topic. When entering the current sightings I did not use the button located next to "Location" but typed in the location as you suggested.  Some of the false sightings came as a result of using the edit window when I was making changes but most of them came after data entry. Since I am going to be away for a week or so I will have time to go back into my field notebooks and make the corrections on the hard copy but I wish I knew what was going on. I am thinking of taking that location out of the data base !

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Jean

Hi Jean!

Nice to hear from you again.

What version of BD are you running?

Can you reproduce this problem? Can you give me the exact steps to reproduce it? Tell me everything you do.

Or perhaps I should get onto your system and watch you enter sightings. Yes - that will be quicker. Let me know when/if you want to try this.

We need to figure out how you are doing this.

Hi! Jeff,

The version is 3.0.2, database is 3.1.5.

I use the sightings window with the state indicated I am entering data for after building the location tree for the trip first if I haven't been there before. I use check list entry system. Sometimes I add a location while entering data. Once I am in the window I usually type the bird's name, check off the seen/hear only boxes for that entry, make any notes, then proceed to the next bird seen at that location. I have been using the time of day indicator to make my life list more accurate. I plan on going back to older data, entering a time so that lifers are in the correct order for that day as seen by me rather than by taxanomic order for the day.

I am currently adding data for a 2004 Texas trip for which I entered only the life birds upon my return home. Not all locations are in the database for this trip.

I am open to having you watch me but timing is an issue. If you want to watch me edit the misplace sightings I have to go back to my notes and find the correct locations first in order to edit. I plan to leave tomorrow afternoon and won't return until the first week of October. What are your thoughts about time?

I hesitate to upgrade my software because if there is a bug I wouldn't want to corrupt the new software. I started with the original Birder's Diary 2.0, made upgrades off the net, purchased 3.0 when available. I have made hundreds of entries but not all go to Aliso Park although looking at the current report most of the entries did this time.

Hi Jean,

You really should upgrade. v3.6 is sooo much better than 3.0. For example, you don't have to enter a time for your sightings because the life list remembers the order you entered them in.

I think the solution to your bug is not to add Locations from the checklist entry window. Add them before hand and then just enter the name in the field. This is another reason you should upgrade. This bug has been long fixed in v3.6.

I am open to having you watch me but timing is an issue. If you want to watch me edit the misplace sightings I have to go back to my notes and find the correct locations first in order to edit. I don't think this is necessary. I remember what the old problem was and it is still the same. Create any new locations in the Location window before going to the checklist window. And then, only type the location name into the field. Do NOT use the Location button on the checklist entry window.

I hesitate to upgrade my software because if there is a bug I wouldn't want to corrupt the new software. I started with the original Birder's Diary 2.0, made upgrades off the net, purchased 3.0 when available. My strong advice to you is to upgrade to v3.6. I offer an upgrade service now for an additional $49, I will get onto your system and completely upgrade you and leave you with a read-to-run new version - data conversion and all.

You get updated tax lists with the upgrade. You are working with tax lists that are many many years old. There have been many changes. V3.6 is infinitely more stable that 3.0. But it will look and function almost the same - no big learning curve coming from v3.0.

You won't corrupt the new software. If you have the $$$ right now, I strongly suggest this approach. I can get it done before you leave tomorrow.

Let me know,
Jeff

Jeff,

Would the new version allow me to go back and indicate order of birds seen for current life list/sightings? If not, then I would need time to manually do this before upgrading. I think you have me convinced upgrading is the way to go but only if I can do the former. I won't leave until after 2:00 PM EDST. I assume I can pay be credit card?

Hi Jean,

The default order, since v3.5, is the order you entered your sightings in - date/time being equal amongst sightings. In v3.0, the order was random when the date/time is equal between sightings.

So just by upgrading, you will automatically get your life list in the order that the sightings were entered when the date/time is the same between sightings.

Did this answer your question? Let me know - I may have missed the point.

Hi! Jeff,

So if I am understanding your reply, sightings that I entered a long time ago without a date/time indicator would automatically go in the correct order for my life list as seen on any particular day? Right now, the most recent sightings from trips I have put a time with, older sightings remain in random order on any given day. I have a separate notebook that keeps the sightings in correct order because I haven't updated the info in BD. If the new version does that, it would save a lot of time before the computer!!!
