I can see the herring gull listings in Rosetta Stone but I can't add it to my sightings list using keyboard entry under ABA, AOU or Clements - I tried typing in Herring Gull, larus argentatus or american herring gull or european herring gull - none of the latter are recognized.   Help!

What is important here is exactly which taxonomic list(s) you are selecting and which location you are specifying in the location filter, in the Sightings Entry Setup window.

You have the latest taxonomic lists, so the checklist data (that which associates a thing with a location) should be up-to-date and correct.

So, please let me know the answer to the question above (attach a screeshot of that window if you can) and we will start here.
