Hi,
My question is on how to use UDL's. I have set up some county locations linked to my state but can't seem to find them under locations when I want to post sightings to them. A year or so back I raised the question of running a report for a state without all the UDL's showing up at which time if I remember correctly you said it was a glitch in the latest version and would be corrected in the next update. I am running the latest version of 3.6 and now can't seem to use the UDL's at all. Am I missing something?? Can you tell me what the current status is on UDL's?? Thanks for any light you can shed on this topic.

Hi Bill,

UDL = user-defined location - right?

There is no glitch that I am aware of with Locations, user-defined or otherwise.

If you can't find a location you created at one point in time, do this:

  1. Open the Locations window, and
  2. type your location name into the Search field.
  3. Once you stop typing it will auto-locate that location in the heirarchy and display it.
  4. You can edit the location at this point.

On the other topics, please provide me with any specific issue you are having with a location (tell me how to reproduce the problem) and I am sure I can help you around it.

Thanks,

Jeff

Hi again, Jeff

Thanks for the prompt reply.  I did find my UDL's O.K. but my problem with running reports that I asked about a year ago seems to persist.  When I run a life list for my state it is broken down by all the udls that are connected to it.  In fact nothing will show under the state unless I posted directly to it without going through a udl.  Is there a way of getting a single life list of my state without showing the    udls??  I hope I am stating my problem clearly.  Could it be affected by how the sightings are recorded?

I'm really confused about this.  I never had this problem on the old 2.5 version.

Thanks again.

Hi Bill,

If you want a life list for your state (the number of species seen by you in your state), do this:

  1. Open the Reports window
  2. Select the Life List TAB
  3. Select the "ABA Life List" template from the list on the left to get started (this presets fields for you)
  4. Enter your observer and state; leave the date fields blank
  5. Select your ABA 2007 w/subspecies taxonomy (you are missing possible splits by not having the latest tax list) from the taxonomy dropdown at the bottom-center.
  6. Click Preview/Print

That is it. You will now have a list of species you have seen in your state or any location that is tied to it as a descendant.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Jeff
