I was once an avid birder, but due to problems with eyesight, I haven't done anything with my Birder's Diary for several years.  I contacted Thayer, who told me to contact you.  I've been unable to match my saved database with whatever updates I've been able to find on my reinstalled computer.

I downloaded v3.5.56, & was so happy to find that my database was restored.  But figuring out what I have to do to keep it has me bamfoozled.  I only need to keep my old records, not build new ones.  Can you help an old birder?

Hello Sharon,

I can certainly help.

First, do you know what version of BD you had that created the saved database? (e.g. v2.0, 2.5.x, 3.0.x, 3.5)

If it was something prior to 3.5, then you should be installing and upgrading to v3.6 (not 3.5).

If you opened the DB using 3.5, then your prior version was probably either 3.0.x or 3.5.

In either case, if you go to the Purchase >> BD Online Store page you will see pricing for upgrade licenses. That is all you need to purchase. Unless you already have a license for v3.5 and would rather stay at that version for free. You will need a copy of your v3.5 license however to activate the program.

Let's start here. Let me know on the above questions please.

My backup says v3.1.5.  When I try to restore my file, it says the current version is 3.5.2.  I suppose, then, that I do not have a license for 3.5.  I have my original CD & registration #, but apparently that's not of interest.

So I should have installed v3.6, not 3.5.56?  I missed that, I guess.

As I understand it, it will cost me $34 to get a license for v3.6.  Correct?

I'm very, very happy that I haven't lost my database of lifers and sightings for the last 25 years, so thank you for keeping this program going.

Hello Sharon,

That makes your previous version 3.0.x. Confusing I know. DB and program versions stay in sync since 3.5 now.

So, that makes the upgrade price from v3.0 to v3.6 $69.

What you should do, is to purchase the 3.0 to 3.6 upgrade license, install 3.6 onto your system, run it, activate the license, then restore your v3.1.5 database backup. Then you will be all set.

One thing to consider is that the taxonomic lists in your database are very old 7+ years. Many changes have occurred since then. If you wanted to upgrade to the latest, then you will want to consider that.

Please see the instructions on this web site: Product Info >> Upgrading from 2.x or 3.0. This lays out all the options.

Let me know if I can assist further.

Jeff

Jeff, thanks. The price seems high, but I guess all my sightings & extensive life list are certainly worth preserving. Since I'm not very active any more, I'll forgo the updated taxonomic lists.
